By the time we reached my apartment, Megan was still out cold. I parked the car and carefully helped her inside, trying not to wake her too much. She mumbled incoherently as I guided her to the couch, but thankfully, she didn’t seem to notice where she was.

I stood there for a moment, watching her sleep, feeling oddly out of place in my own home. I wasn’t used to having guests—especially not ones I barely knew. But despite the mess of the evening, there was something oddly peaceful about the scene. Megan was safe, and that’s all that mattered.

I grabbed a blanket from the hall closet and draped it over her, making sure she was comfortable. Then, with a sigh, I sat down in the armchair across from the couch, staring at the woman who had unexpectedly found her way into my life that night.

“Good night, Megan,” I muttered quietly.

Little did I know, this was just the beginning of something I hadn’t anticipated.
