(Megan’s POV)
“So, there’s this new movie coming out tomorrow,” Megan said casually as she scrolled through her phone. She and Gerald had been texting more often since their coffee meetup, bonding over their shared interests in movies and video games. It had been easy, comfortable even, and Megan found herself looking forward to their chats.
“Oh? What’s it about?” Gerald’s text came through almost immediately, making her smile.
“It’s fantasy, adventure. You know, magic, epic battles, the usual. I figured it’d be right up your alley.”
Megan hesitated for a second, her fingers hovering over the screen before she typed the next message.
Do you want to see it with me?
She hit send and immediately felt a wave of uncertainty. It was just a movie invite, no big deal, right? They were friends, after all. But a part of her was curious about why she felt a little thrill at the thought of spending more time with him.
Her phone buzzed.
Sure! I’d love to. When’s it playing?
Megan grinned, feeling a spark of excitement she hadn’t expected. Gerald might be quiet, but their conversations had been fun, and she was genuinely looking forward to seeing a movie with him. The best part? There was no pressure—just two friends hanging out and geeking out over their favorite genre.

The next evening, Megan waited outside the cinema, glancing around for Gerald. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d been this excited to see a movie, but it wasn’t just about the film. There was something about Gerald’s quiet presence that made her feel at ease.
“Hey,” a familiar voice called out, and she turned to see Gerald approaching, his usual calm demeanor making her smile.
“Hey yourself,” she greeted, waving him over. “Ready for some magic and mayhem?”
Gerald smiled, his expression warm and relaxed. “Always.”
They grabbed their tickets and snacks before heading into the theater. The lights dimmed, and the opening scenes of the film began to play. As the movie unfolded, Megan couldn’t help but glance at Gerald out of the corner of her eye. He was focused on the screen, his expression serious, but every now and then, he’d smile or chuckle at a particularly good scene. It made her smile too.

(Gerald’s POV)
By the time the movie ended, I found myself surprisingly energized. It had been a solid film—good world-building, a lot of action, and just the right amount of adventure. But more than that, I realized I’d had a genuinely good time with Megan. I hadn’t felt this comfortable around someone in a while, especially not someone I’d only just met.
As we walked out of the theater, I noticed Megan’s eyes light up as she talked about her favorite scenes.
“And that battle scene with the dragons? It was so well done. I mean, come on, did you see the way they animated the fire?”
I chuckled, nodding along. “Yeah, that was impressive. I honestly didn’t expect the effects to be that good.”
“I know, right?” Megan smiled up at me, her excitement contagious. “I’m glad we saw it together. It was fun.”
“Yeah, me too,” I said, surprised at how natural it felt to say that. Hanging out with Megan was easy. The more time I spent with her, the more I realized that I didn’t have to overthink things or force conversation. It just flowed.
We stopped outside the cinema, and for a moment, there was an awkward pause as we both tried to figure out what came next. Megan shifted on her feet, glancing up at me.
“Hey,” she started, a bit hesitant, “are you hungry? I was thinking maybe we could grab dinner. No pressure or anything.”
I blinked, caught off guard by the invite. Part of me was tempted to say no, to keep things simple, but the other part—the part that had been enjoying Megan’s company more than I cared to admit—spoke up before I could stop myself.
“Yeah, that sounds good. I could eat.”
Her smile widened, and we headed down the street in search of a good place to eat. We ended up finding a small, cozy diner nearby that neither of us had been to before. The atmosphere was laid-back, with dim lighting and a quiet buzz of conversation that felt perfect for our low-key evening.
“So, what’s your go-to comfort food?” Megan asked as we settled into a booth.
I shrugged, glancing at the menu. “Honestly? Probably a burger. You can’t go wrong with that.”
Megan grinned. “Good choice. I’m all about pasta. It’s like a warm hug in food form.”
I laughed, shaking my head. “I can see that. Simple, but comforting.”
As we ordered our meals and waited for the food to arrive, the conversation picked up again. We talked about the movie, comparing notes on the best scenes and critiquing the weaker parts. Megan had a way of breaking things down in such an enthusiastic way that I found myself smiling more than I usually would.
“So, are you into video games too?” she asked at one point, sipping her drink.
I nodded. “Yeah, I play when I have the time. Mostly adventure stuff. What about you?”
Megan’s eyes lit up again, and she leaned forward, excited. “Definitely. I’ve been into RPGs since I was a kid. ‘Skyrim,’ ‘Zelda,’ anything with an open world where I can just get lost for hours.”
I raised an eyebrow, impressed. “Zelda, huh? Classic.”
She laughed. “You can’t go wrong with the classics.”
As we continued to talk, I found myself feeling more and more at ease. It was strange, really. I wasn’t the type to open up easily, but with Megan, it didn’t feel forced. We had enough in common to keep the conversation going, but even when we weren’t talking, the silence didn’t feel awkward. It was… comfortable.
And that’s what confused me the most.
I wasn’t used to feeling this comfortable around people, especially not someone I’d just met. But with Megan, it felt different. It felt right, even though I couldn’t quite figure out why. I wasn’t even sure if I should be overthinking it. After all, we were just friends, right?
But then again, why did I feel this weird sense of anticipation whenever I was around her?

(Megan’s POV)
Dinner with Gerald had gone better than I expected. I wasn’t sure what I’d been expecting, really. After all, we were just hanging out as friends. No agenda, no expectations. But as the evening went on, I found myself enjoying his company more and more.
He was funny in a quiet way, and his subtle sarcasm made me laugh more than once. But beyond that, I liked the way he listened—really listened—when I talked. He wasn’t just nodding along or waiting for his turn to speak. He was present, and that was something I hadn’t realized I valued so much.
By the time we finished our meals and were walking back to our cars, I couldn’t help but feel like tonight had been… special. Not in a romantic way—at least, I didn’t think so—but in a way that made me feel like I’d found a new friend. And that was something worth holding onto.
“Thanks for tonight,” I said as we stopped by my car. “I had a lot of fun.”
Gerald smiled, his eyes soft in the dim streetlight. “Yeah, me too. We should do this again sometime.”
I nodded, feeling that familiar spark of excitement again. “Definitely.”
