Asher and I walk hand in hand in the opposite direction of the mess hall. It almost feels weird to not be going there when we leave the cabin.
I stick close to Asher as always, but I'm brave enough to look around a bit. There are cabins spread out among the trees, all connected by the dirt pathways. In the distance I can barely hear shouting and laughing, a bright light being reflects off of water between the trees. That must be the lake.
People mill around, going in and out of the cabins. Some of the cabins resemble the Asher and mine, I assume they are also housing cabins. Others are larger or shaped differently, these buildings have colorful posters around the door.
I almost stumble over myself as I flinch back, a flash of black and red flying in front of my face. Only when the thing passes can I recognize what it is. A butterfly. Its wings flapping lazily as it floats in the air.
A pull from Asher, his hands going to my arm, helps me stay on my feet. "Be careful little bear, we don't want any cuts or scrapes on the first day."
"Sorry." I mumble a half hearted apology, my attention still on the butterfly. I wonder what it would be like to fly.
We get to a door of a cabin in a short amount of time, in blocky colorful letter above the door it reads Sunrise Play Room. Asher opens the door and holds it for me.
My eyes are instantly attacked by the bright, warm hues of red, orange and yellow. Behind me Asher gently pushes me forward as I take in the room.
It looks like one of the rooms my mom used to drop me off at during the summer when I was five. The floors are wooden but colorful rugs, sticking to the sunrise theme, are littered throughout the room. There are tables and chairs, plastic like the one in my cabin. There is a large comfy looking couch pushed against a wall where a bookcase stands next to it, small beanbag chairs also lay near that area. On the opposite side of the room there is a chest and drawers. Toys are scattered around the floor over there, where a couple of people are sitting.
Asher walks around me, leading us over to the couch. He sits down, sinking slightly into the soft cushions. Asher's arms go under my armpits and he easily lifts me onto his lap.
I blush immediately as I look around the room, making sure no one sees me sitting on his lap. "Sit by myself please?" I whisper to the older boy as I try to wiggle off his lap.
"Sure little bear, good manners." Asher smiles and he lets me sit at his side. My lip twitches upwards at the compliment.
I stay close to Asher, leaning into his strong build as I get comfortable watching the people around the room. A girl and boy are over by the toy chest, two other boys sit off to the side, talking with each other but keeping an eye on the boy and girl.
The girl has her hair in pigtails, the purple bows match her shirt and fluffy tutu. The only out of place item on her is the yellow wrist band. When she bends over her tutu lifts up, showing a pink pull-up with little flowers on it.
The boy playing with the girl has on a red shirt with a picture of a fire truck on it, cutting off right above the edge of his large puffy diaper. He has no pants on, his legs being pushed apart by the diaper are bare. He also has a yellow wristband on.
The boy and girl dig through the toy chest, ignoring all of the other brightly colored items at their feet. They both come up at the same time, their hands both on a single yellow stuffed lion. They both pull at the toy, the girl getting the upper hand as she gets it closer to her.
The boy stomps his feet as he shouts "It's mine!" The shout grabs the attention of the two boys sitting off to the side, both of them wear blue wristbands.
