Content Warning!

This chapter contains imagery relating to a dissection of an animal. I tried to keep it not overly graphic but if this bothers you, feel free to skip the first section of the chapter.

Any content that I believe deserves a trigger warning will be put at the beginning of a chapter if it's not listed in the intro.

The biology class fell into a comfortable silence once the teacher started class. "Today, we are conducting our dissection lab as a review for the current module." Remember that this lab is worth a lot of points, so please be sure to participate, or your grade may drop by quite a bit. Now I'll give you a few minutes to review the safety procedures handout and choose your partners. Please go to the biology lab two doors down when you're ready."

Kou stood up before the teacher finished his announcement, rushing over to Y/N's desk. Desperate to be her partner for the project and avoid spending more torturous moments with Miya.

"Hey Y/n! Would you mind being partners?" He asked, well aware of the glares other students were sending to Y/N.

Y/N struggled to return his smile. "That'd be great, but I don't like the idea of cutting up animals. I don't know... it just seems wrong. I might just see if I can request an alternative assignment because I don't feel super comfortable doing this."

Kou sympathetically replied, "Totally understand, Y/N. There's not really an opportunity to skip this, though. But I'll do the heavy lifting for us, I promise."

Y/N slowly nodded, "Thanks, Kou."

His breath hitched. "Yeah, no worries. Common, let's go."

The high school biology lab made Y/N heart race harder. Students rushed between cluttered lab tables, where trays and tools were displayed. The air felt heavy with the scent of ethanol, and the constant hum of chatter felt overwhelming. Artificial light harshly filtered into the room. Posters of complex biological processes loomed overhead, making the area feel even smaller.

The partners grabbed gloves and a lab report from the front table and headed to an open spot. Nestled in the back, Y/N reviewed the safety procedures.

Gloves? ✔

Lab report/instructions. ✔

Clean work area? Good enough. ✔

Tools prepared?

Y/N anxiously gazed at the sharp blades before her. Each looked sharper than the last, and she wondered if it was a good idea to leave scalpels in the hands of teenagers.

Tools prepared? ✔

"Oh, Y/n?" Kou said, reading the list, "I think you need to put your hair up."

"Crap, I don't have a hair tie. Give me one second, and I'll go ask someone."

Kou stopped her before she could take one step, "Here you can just use this."

He pulled a thin, braided leather bracelet off his wrist. The bracelet was adorned by a beautiful wedding band looped around it. Y/N looked at Kou confused. He smirked, "Guess I'll do it for you; turn around."

He snuggly tied her H/L hair through the bracelet, creating a tight ponytail. He was so close Y/N could hear his heavy breathing. Once he was done, she subconsciously reached behind her head and stroked the band.

"That's my grandpa's wedding ring; I put it on a bracelet because I don't really like wearing rings and I was worried I'd lose it." His voice grew soft. "He gave it to me before he passed last year."
