Chapter 37

"Your Wolf has been let loose." Serani doesn't wait for me to confirm this. She doesn't even turn her head to Mansel in the driver's seat, "I will punish both you and Rowan when we get back to Diurnal."

He doesn't even flinch, "Yes, Head Sentinel—"

"You won't lay a hand on my Sentinels, Serani," I bare my teeth. She whips around in her seat, but I cut her off before she can utter a word, "My Wolf is what keeps me grounded. You get no say in—"

"I get every say," Her eyes flash bright gold, and for a second, she looks like Sashi. "I am the Head Sentinel—"

"And I am one of the High Prophets," Everyone in the car is shocked when my hand shoots out and I grab her collar. I thrust her towards me and snarl lowly, "You know what I can do, Serani. Don't piss me off, and don't touch my Wolves."

"Sashi will hear about this."

"Tell her then." Just as the tension is about to boil over, Mansel parks the car to the curb. I hold onto Serani for a moment longer before I shove her away, "We've arrived. Thank you for your help in Breccia, but now you can kindly fuck off back to France."

Her gaze is narrowed and zeroed in on me, "Don't forget, Amelia. Your time in Alaska is temporary. Once Orion is defeated, I will drag you and your son back to The Order to continue your work at The Order. Your time as a Priestess doesn't end with this war."

On that cheery note, she grabs her bags and slams the door. We both sit in the car as she and her team of Sentinels head inside.

"Cursed by your Alpha's son and threatened by my Head Sentinel," Mansel chuckles quietly to himself, "I get in trouble wherever I follow you, High Prophet."

I reach over and squeeze his shoulder. He grasps my hand and meets my eyes. "You've protected me all this time, Mansel. I won't let anything happen to you."

"I haven't protected you," Is his reply, "Or else your body and mind wouldn't be full of scars."

Before I can respond, the car door opens. I initially think that Serani has come back, but am relieved to see Dayton. He slides into the door and buckles up.

"Should have figured that you and Serani wouldn't have turned a new leaf. It's kind of sad, really. You're both scary and match each other's bitch energy."

"Why are you here?" I already know the answer, but I like to push his buttons just as much as he pushes mine. He raises an eyebrow at me and doesn't entertain my question. I laugh and tell Mansel to go.

The car ride back up to Alaska is uneventful. Dayton teases Mansel for a majority it, and Mansel ignores him. I call Rowan and let her know that we're headed back. She lets me know that she's taken Nataniel out to the lake and spent the day on the water, so I enjoy hearing the both of them tell me all the details of their adventure.

Sometime after crossing the Alaskan border, I fall asleep. When I open my eyes, I'm in the car by myself.

The trees zoom by and the large mountains appear unmoving. Anxiety gnaws in my stomach, but I can't bring myself to move. My body remains relaxed while my mind races. Where is Mansel? Where is Dayton?

"You've done well."

I turn and find Hekate's cloaked figure sitting on the other side of the backseat. She faces forward with Her head bowed. A crow sits on her lap and lets Her stroke its head.

"Locking away the one half of the Black Wolf will cut off Orion's eyes and ears from anything he might have overheard."

"I still don't understand...how is the Wolf able to inhabit two people? I didn't think that would be possible."
