After drying off and getting her bearings, Agatha wasted no time. She needed to find Sophie, and she needed to get them both home. She pushed through the misty woods that separated the two schools, her every step fueled by her fierce loyalty to her friend.
Finally, she found Sophie in the midst of a radiant courtyard, surrounded by admiring students. Sophie was laughing, basking in the attention of the crowd, as if she had already won the heart of the School for Good.
“Sophie!” Agatha called out, pushing through the sea of students.
Sophie turned, her eyes lighting up at the sight of Agatha, but that joy quickly faded when she saw the state of her friend. “Agatha… what happened to you?”
“We need to go,” Agatha said urgently, grabbing Sophie’s arm. “Now.”
Sophie frowned, pulling her arm free. “Go? Agatha, look around! This is where we’re meant to be! I’m finally—”
“No!” Agatha snapped. “This isn’t right. You don’t belong here, and I definitely don’t belong in that… that pit of nightmares!”
Sophie sighed, exasperated. “You always see the worst in everything. Look at this place! It’s paradise!”
“It’s fake, Sophie,” Agatha replied, her voice rising. “It’s all an illusion. We’re not meant for this. We need to get back to Gavaldon, before it’s too late.”
“Too late for what?” Sophie shot back, her eyes flashing with frustration. “For you? Because I belong here! Look at me, Agatha—I’m the perfect princess!”
Agatha’s eyes widened, her heart breaking at Sophie’s words. “And what does that make me? The villain in your fairy tale?”
Sophie hesitated, guilt flickering in her eyes. “No… I didn’t mean it like that.”
“But that’s how it is, isn’t it?” Agatha said softly, her voice filled with sadness. “You get to be the princess, and I get to be the monster. That’s why we have to leave. I won’t let this place change you.”
Sophie shook her head. “I’m not leaving, Agatha. I’ve waited my whole life for this.”
Agatha stared at her friend, her heart heavy with the weight of their choices. Finally, she turned away, the decision already made. “Then I’ll go on my own.”
---
Agatha walked away, leaving Sophie behind in the garden. As she returned to the shadows of the School for Evil, something inside her shifted. She couldn’t save Sophie if she didn’t understand this place—this world of shadows and twisted power. She had to stay, for now. But one thing was certain: she would never become the monster everyone expected her to be.
