The courtyard of the School for Evil erupted into chaos as Hester made the first move. Shadows coiled from her fingers, stretching through the air like vipers toward Agatha. The crowd of Nevers surrounding the arena tensed in anticipation, murmuring amongst themselves.
Agatha felt the weight of their eyes, but she stayed focused. She raised her hands, conjuring a shield of dark energy that deflected Hester’s attack. The shadows hissed and twisted as they hit the barrier, dissipating into the air.
"You’re weak, Agatha," Hester spat, her voice cutting through the tension. "You don’t belong here. You’ll never belong here."
Agatha didn’t respond. Her mind was whirling, but she couldn’t let Hester’s words sink in. She needed to stay strong. This wasn’t just about proving her strength to Hester or the other Nevers; it was about proving it to herself.
With a sharp motion, she summoned dark flames that roared toward Hester, but Hester was quick, dodging with ease. "Is that all you’ve got?" Hester sneered, her expression cold and calculating.
Agatha took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay calm. This wasn’t about raw power. It was about outsmarting her opponent. She could feel the magic humming beneath her skin, aching to be unleashed, but she needed to be careful. Hester was formidable, and Agatha couldn’t afford any mistakes.
The crowd buzzed with excitement, the tension palpable. Agatha spotted Aric standing off to the side, watching with a cold, unreadable expression. He seemed uninterested in the outcome, but his presence made her skin prickle.
"Come on, Agatha," Hester taunted, summoning more shadows. "Show us what you’re really made of."
Agatha’s gaze narrowed, and she finally made her move. She raised her arms and summoned a vortex of dark energy. It spiraled outward, engulfing the courtyard, knocking several students off balance as the ground shook beneath their feet. The vortex closed in on Hester, wrapping around her like a cage.
For a brief moment, Hester’s expression flickered with surprise, but she quickly masked it with anger. "You think this will stop me?" she growled, summoning her own magic to try and break free.
Agatha gritted her teeth, concentrating on holding the vortex in place. She could feel Hester’s resistance, the pressure building as their powers clashed. The air was thick with dark energy, crackling with tension.
The students watched in awe as the two girls faced off, their rivalry reaching a boiling point. Agatha could feel the weight of their eyes on her, but she refused to let it distract her. She wasn’t just fighting for herself—she was fighting to survive in a world that had rejected her from the start.
With a final push of power, Agatha tightened the vortex, trapping Hester within. The shadows around Hester faltered, and for the first time, Hester’s expression turned to one of true frustration. Agatha had won.
The crowd murmured in shock, some students clearly impressed while others seemed unsettled. Hester’s face was twisted with rage as she struggled against the cage of magic.
"This isn’t over, Agatha," she hissed, her voice venomous. "You’ll regret this."
Agatha lowered her arms, releasing the vortex. Hester fell to the ground, gasping for breath. Agatha watched her for a moment, feeling a strange mixture of triumph and guilt. She hadn’t wanted to humiliate Hester, but she had no choice. In this school, weakness was dangerous.
As the crowd dispersed, Agatha glanced around the courtyard, her eyes catching on Aric once more. His gaze was still cold, his expression unreadable. Agatha shivered, feeling the tension between them, but she quickly pushed it aside.

On the other side of the enchanted forest, Sophie stood in the lush gardens of the School for Good, watching the golden sunlight dance through the leaves. The trial had begun at the School for Evil, and while she wasn’t physically present, she felt an unease creeping up her spine.
Agatha was in the middle of it. Her best friend, her constant shadow, was caught in the dark, twisted game of the Nevers, and Sophie wasn’t there to help her.
Sophie had been trying to fit into her new world, surrounded by beauty and light. She was the princess she had always dreamed of becoming, admired by the Evers and treated like royalty. But as much as she wanted to revel in it, there was a nagging emptiness gnawing at her.
Her eyes wandered across the golden fields and manicured gardens, but all she could think about was Agatha. They had been inseparable for so long, but now it felt like there was an ocean between them. Sophie had everything she’d ever wanted, but it didn’t feel as perfect as she had imagined.
"Sophie!"
A voice interrupted her thoughts, and she turned to see Beatrix, one of the Ever princesses, approaching her with a bright smile. "We’re going to the lake for a swim. Do you want to join us?"
Sophie forced a smile. "Of course! I’ll be there in a minute."
Beatrix beamed and hurried off with her group of Evergirls, leaving Sophie standing alone. She stared at the shimmering lake in the distance, but her mind was elsewhere. Agatha was fighting for her place in the School for Evil, and Sophie was beginning to realize that their paths were diverging more and more each day.

That night, Agatha sat by the window of her dormitory, staring out into the dark landscape of the School for Evil. The victory over Hester hadn’t brought the satisfaction she had hoped for. It had been necessary, but the hollow feeling in her chest remained.
There was a knock at the door, and Agatha turned to see Aric standing in the doorway, his expression as unreadable as ever.
"You held your own today," he said, his voice low and cold.
"Thanks," Agatha replied, though the word felt empty on her lips. She wasn’t sure how to feel about Aric. He was always there, lurking in the shadows, watching her with those calculating eyes.
Aric stepped into the room, his presence heavy and unsettling. "Hester won’t give up, you know. She’s going to come after you again."
"I know," Agatha said quietly. "But I’ll be ready."
Aric studied her for a moment, his gaze intense. "You’re strong, Agatha. But strength alone won’t save you here. You’ll need more than that."
Agatha met his gaze, her heart pounding in her chest. There was something dangerous about Aric, something she didn’t trust. But there was also something else, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
"I can handle myself," she said, her voice steady.
Aric smirked, a flicker of amusement crossing his face. "We’ll see."
Without another word, he turned and left, disappearing into the shadows once more. Agatha watched him go, feeling a mix of unease and determination. She didn’t trust Aric, but she knew he was right. The school was a dangerous place, and she couldn’t afford to let her guard down.
As she sat in the silence of her room, Agatha’s thoughts drifted to Sophie. They hadn’t spoken since the separation of their schools. She wondered if Sophie was adjusting to her new life as an Ever, living the fairytale she had always dreamed of. The thought of Sophie in that world, surrounded by beauty and light, felt so far removed from Agatha’s own reality.
They were growing apart, and Agatha could feel it. The bond they had shared since childhood was fraying at the edges, strained by the darkness of the School for Evil and the light of the School for Good.
And yet, deep down, Agatha still hoped that somehow, some way, they could find their way back to each other.
But as the shadows outside her window deepened, Agatha knew that the path ahead was uncertain. And in a world where good and evil were in constant conflict, nothing was ever as simple as it seemed.

As Agatha navigates the treacherous politics of the School for Evil, and Sophie basks in the adoration of the Evers, both girls face challenges that will test their friendship and their place in their respective worlds.
