The drive back to the city was eerily quiet, as if the world outside had forgotten the chaos they had left behind. Bella leaned against the car door, her body vibrating with leftover adrenaline. She wanted to speak, to break the heavy silence between her and Luca, but the words seemed lodged in her throat.
Luca's expression was impassive, his hands firm on the wheel, his eyes focused on the road. Bella had seen him kill before, but this time had been different. There was a finality to it, a sense that something between them had irrevocably shifted. She wasn't sure if it was the act of killing Vincent or something deeper—a line they had crossed together.
By the time they reached Luca's penthouse, Bella's exhaustion weighed heavily on her. The sharp tension that had carried her through the night was dissipating, leaving only a bone-deep weariness in its wake. Luca parked the car and they walked in silence through the underground garage, up the private elevator to the top floor.
Inside the penthouse, Luca tossed his keys onto the kitchen counter, the metallic clink echoing through the spacious room. He removed his gun and set it down on the table, his movements slow, deliberate. Bella watched him, her heartbeat still not fully settled. The question was on her lips before she could stop herself.
"Do you think it's really over?"
Luca turned to her, his expression unreadable. "Vincent's dead. That was the plan."
"But is that it?" Bella asked, her voice softer now. "Just because he's gone, it doesn't mean everything else disappears."
Luca's jaw tightened as he looked at her. "You're right. There'll be fallout, others who'll try to fill the void. But we're prepared for that. We have to be."
Bella swallowed, feeling the weight of their shared reality press down on her. She had chosen this life. She had fought beside Luca, risked everything for him, but the violence and the endless power struggles still unnerved her. And it wasn't just that. There was something about the way Luca had looked at Vincent before pulling the trigger, the way he'd said, "It's over," that made her realize it might not be.
He might never be free of it.
"What happens to us now?" Bella asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Luca's gaze softened for the briefest of moments. He stepped closer, his hand brushing against her cheek. "We survive, Bella. We keep moving forward."
The simplicity of his answer made Bella's heart ache. She wanted more than survival, more than just keeping their heads above water in a sea of enemies and alliances. But she knew this was Luca's way. He'd built his life around power and control, and he was good at it. It was what kept him alive. What had kept them alive.
She leaned into his touch, closing her eyes for a moment, letting the warmth of his hand ground her.
"I don't want to lose you," she whispered.
"You won't," Luca said firmly, his thumb brushing the corner of her mouth. "I'm not going anywhere."
Bella wanted to believe him, wanted to trust that the dangers lurking outside wouldn't pull him away from her, that they could finally have something real after all the bloodshed. But deep down, she knew that as long as they were in this world, there would always be a new threat. A new war.
They went to bed that night wrapped in each other's arms, the weight of their shared burden hanging in the air. Bella drifted off to sleep, but her dreams were filled with flashes of the night, of Vincent's cold smile, of the gunshot that had ended it all.
When she awoke, the sunlight was filtering through the curtains, casting a soft glow across the room. Luca was already up, standing by the window, his back to her as he looked out over the city. Bella sat up slowly, watching him in the quiet stillness of the morning. She could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands rested on the windowsill, his posture stiff and controlled.
"Luca," she called softly.
He turned, his eyes meeting hers. There was something in his expression she hadn't seen before—an uncertainty, maybe even a vulnerability that he rarely let show.
"What are you thinking?" she asked, sliding out of bed and walking over to him.
Luca let out a breath, his hand reaching for hers as she approached. "I'm thinking about the future. About what happens now that Vincent's gone."
Bella laced her fingers with his, her thumb brushing his knuckles. "What do you want to happen?"
"I want to protect what's mine," he said, his voice low but steady. "I want to build something out of all this chaos."
Bella studied him for a moment, her chest tightening. "And us?"
Luca looked at her, his gaze unwavering. "You're a part of that, Bella. You always have been."
It was as close to a declaration as she'd ever heard from him, and though it wasn't filled with grand promises or flowery words, it was enough for now. She knew Luca wasn't the kind of man to offer easy assurances, but his actions, his loyalty, and the way he looked at her said more than any words ever could.
"We've come this far," Bella said softly, leaning into him. "I'm not going anywhere either."
They stood there, the two of them looking out over the city, the sun rising on a new day. It wasn't a clean slate—far from it. There were still enemies lurking, dangers they hadn't yet faced. But in that moment, they had each other, and that was enough to face whatever came next.
As the light filtered in and warmed their skin, Bella realized that no matter what battles lay ahead, she wasn't alone. She had chosen this life, chosen Luca. And together, they would find a way to survive.
