Inside the sheriff’s office, Cole’s deputy, Sam Carter, slumped against the wall, nursing a bite wound on his arm. “It ain’t looking good, Sheriff,” he muttered through gritted teeth. “They’re getting in… it’s just a matter of time.”
Cole tightened his grip on his rifle. His jaw clenched in determination. "We ain’t leaving anyone behind, Sam. We’ll get through this, but we need to find a way out before the whole town's overrun."
A blood-curdling scream echoed from the direction of the general store, followed by the sound of shattering glass. Cole cursed under his breath. There was no time to lose.
He threw open the door, scanning the town’s main street, now littered with broken wagons and the bodies of the fallen. A group of the undead staggered toward him, their jaws slack, blood dripping from their torn clothes. With a steady hand, Cole took aim and fired, the crack of his rifle echoing through the empty town.
