Three days after I met Killian at Wings & Fries, I got a call from RMG (RebelKinc Media Group). The voice on the other end was polite, almost formal, and told me that the CEO and President of RMG wanted to meet with me.
I blinked, confused, wondering if it was a scam or a prank. It didn't make sense. Why would the head of the parent company want to meet with me?
But after I hung up, I received a calendar invite from Suzanne Meyers, who used a legitimate RMG email address. I am meeting Kaleb the next day. That at least made it feel less like a hoax, but still, why was this happening? Was this connected to what went down with Vincent and Cassandra?
I needed answers and fast. I called Iyana, my former intern, figuring if anyone had the scoop, it would be her. The phone barely rang twice before she picked up, her voice bursting with excitement.
"Boss! I miss you!" she practically yelled into the phone.
I smiled despite my confusion. "I missed you too, Iyana. How's it going in the office?"
"Oh, you'll never guess... I can't even talk right now! But are you free for lunch today?" she replied, her voice filled with that same excitement as if she were holding back something big.
Curiosity was already gnawing at me, so we made plans. A couple of hours later, we were at The Caffeine Factor, our usual spot just three blocks from RebelKinc Ad Agency.
Iyana sat across from me, her face glowing as she bit into a salmon sourdough sandwich.
"So..." I leaned in, eager to get to the point. "Spill the tea, missy."
Iyana paused mid-bite, eyes rolling back as she practically moaned. "Oh my God, this is to die for, sis!" she said, savouring the food.
I rolled my eyes. "You and your foodgasms."
Iyana quickly wiped her mouth and leaned in, eyes glinting with excitement. "Okay, okay, here's the tea. Vincent and Cassandra? They're totally out of the team. I don't know if they got canned or what, but who cares, right? After they screwed you over, I was low-key hoping a meteor would hit them."
Her words hit me like a brick. "Wait, what? They're out?"
"Yeah! I'm serious!" Iyana continued, biting into her sandwich again like this was typical gossip. "Anyway, do you think you'll come back now that they're gone? 'Cause, girl, I need you back in my life ASAP!"
I stared at her, stunned. Vincent and Cassandra, out? How did this happen so fast? It didn't make any sense. Could this have anything to do with that call from RebelKinc's parent company? It had to be. But how did they even know about my situation?
I narrowed my eyes. "You didn't tell anyone about my dismissal, did you? I mean, the whole thing?"
Iyana straightened up, her eyes gleaming with that look she always got when she was about to drop something big. I braced myself. I knew that looked well—it usually meant trouble.
"So, I did something wild," she announced, a mischievous grin spreading across her face.
My eyes widened, half-shocked, half-terrified of what might come out of her mouth next.
"Iyana, what did you do?" I asked, already feeling a mix of dread and curiosity. Things tend to escalate quickly when Iyana gets an idea in her head.
Her grin grew even more devious. "I became a stalker—no, wait—a professional surveillant for RMG's CEO."
I stared at her in absolute horror. "You... you... stalked Kaleb Kincaid? H-how did you even—"
"Oh, please, boss, must you ask?" she interrupted, brushing off my question like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
