Dasuki State, Nigeria.
2022.
It was Night time already and he had to take Umaimah to the hospital, her fever was back already and her body was hot again. Sizzling hot, like a burning sensation. Should he keep it away from Nini, But what if she gets depressed again.
He decided to tell her atleast she'll have something to do and not sulk all day. After Umaimah was laid perfectly at the backseat he went back to Nini and told her about Umaimah's fever.
Her face suddenly had an expression, an emotion. Worry and fear written all over it at the same time. Of course she stood up after dragging her hijab and wrestling into the fabric, She sat in the car next to Umaimah.
Comforting her and whispering sweet nothings to her ear as he drove to the hospital of a trusted acquaintance.
After a thorough checkup and tests the doctor came out and they rushed to where he stood.
“It's Nothing to worry about, She has Malaria and Typhoid. We gave her some injections and put her on drip, she'll be fine God willing. Care to buy these medication." Nabeel took the paper from him after thanking him while Nini walked to her daughter's room. He headed out to get the Medication.
Nini insisted she wants to go home and bring food for Umaimah. Finally, she wants to cook. Back to what she loves doing the most, he called the driver and he was already on his way.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Nini asked as she caressed Umaimah's forehead, In a gentle manner, in a motherly manner.
She nodded. " I didn't want to stress you and Nabeel said not to tell you." She confessed.
Nini glared at Nabeel who was seated across the rooom. " So, it was all you. Nabeel?"
"No. Nini..." He staggered.
She smiled—Nini smiled. Something she has been devoid of for days, His heart jumped in excitement. Had he known she'll smile if one of them were sick, he'ld have fallen sick long back. Slowly, he'll get her back to the way she used to be—The woman that spreads happiness around her.
“Don’t listen to Nabeel. Next time, when something happens, come and tell me, alright? I’m your mother.”
Umaimah nodded and smiled faintly at Nini. The driver arrived, and Nini left with him, leaving Nabeel alone with Umaimah in an awkward silence.
“Did you have to tell her it was me?” He asked, glaring at Umaimah.
“Did you want me to lie? Sorry, I’m not a liar, if you are,” she shot back.
“Don’t you think you should be less rude to someone who was just being caring to you earlier? I broke your fever. Come to think of it, I’m always your life-saver.”
She shrugged.
“I never asked you to.” Oh, she never ceased to amaze him, such an ingrate.
“That reminds me, have you always been like this—so ungrateful? Maybe that’s why your adoptive parents maltreated you. You deserved it,” He said before turning back to my phone.
She didn’t respond as he’d insinuated. He didn’t care; I kept scrolling. Then, glanced up—she was crying. Shit! What did he do?
His feelings were all over the place, different emotions swirling. What had he done? Maybe he had mocked a sad past she didn’t want to remember.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—” he started, but she cut me off.
“You say I deserved it. You think so? You always call me an ingrate, I've heard that word that I'm tired of hearing it already. Do you even know what kind of life I lived there? The turmoil?” She asked tears rolling down her cheeks.
