Rafe's POV
I sit on the edge of the bed, the room dimly lit by the soft glow of the lamp beside me. Teresa's finally asleep, curled up under the blankets, her face turned away, her breaths deep and even. But I can't relax. I can't fucking sleep. Not when everything is still hanging by a thread, so close to unraveling.
Quietly, I slip out of bed, careful not to wake her, and head into the bathroom. I close the door behind me, pulling my phone from my pocket.
I dial the number, my heart pounding hard and steady in my chest as the line rings once, twice—
"Rafe." The voice on the other end is low and smooth, laced with just the faintest hint of a Southern drawl. "What can I do for you?"
"I need a favor," I say quietly, glancing over my shoulder to make sure the door is closed tight. "Something big."
There's a pause, and I can practically hear the smile spreading across his lips. "I'm listening."
"I need you to find someone," I murmur, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper. "Someone who's willing to take the fall for... an incident that happened tonight. I'll pay—whatever it takes."
"An incident?" he echoes, amusement coloring his tone. "Care to elaborate?"
"No," I snap, impatience flaring in my chest. "You don't need to know the details. Just find someone who's desperate enough to take the blame for a violent altercation. Assault charges, maybe worse."
Another pause, longer this time. "You're talking serious money, Cameron. You sure you want to do this?"
"Yeah," I murmur, my voice tight. "I'm sure. Get it done. And make sure it's airtight. No loose ends."
"Alright," he says finally, the amusement gone from his voice, replaced by something colder, more calculating. "I'll get on it. But it's gonna cost you."
"I don't care what it costs," I mutter, my fingers tightening around the phone. "Just do it. And one more thing."
"Go on."
"I need someone to keep tabs on a girl," I say quietly, my gaze flicking back to the closed bathroom door, my chest tightening with a mix of anxiety and anger. "Kiara Carrera. She's a problem."
"I know the name," he says slowly, and I can hear the wheels turning in his head. "What do you want me to do with her?"
"Nothing. Not yet," I murmur, leaning against the sink, my jaw clenched. "Just keep an eye on her. As soon as a hospital admits someone named Kiara Carrera, I want to know. I'll take care of it from there."
"And by 'take care of it,' you mean...?"
"That's not your concern," I growl softly, my voice edged with warning. "Just make sure she doesn't talk. If she remembers, if she even thinks about running her mouth, I want to know. I'll handle it."
A low hum of approval comes through the line. "You've got it. I'll have someone monitoring all the hospitals in the area. And if she does talk..."
"She won't," I cut in, my voice hard. "But if she does, I'll keep her mouth shut. One way or another."
There's a beat of silence, and then he lets out a soft, dark chuckle. "Alright, Cameron. I'll make it happen. I'll be in touch."
The line goes dead, and I let out a long breath, my heart still hammering wildly in my chest.
I step out of the bathroom, my gaze landing on her sleeping form, her face peaceful and relaxed. She looks so small, so fragile, curled up under the blankets like that. It's hard to believe that just a few hours ago, she was standing over Kiara, covered in blood, her hands shaking, her eyes wide with panic.
