Summer drifted by in a flurry of emotions for Aiden and Tank. After graduation, they spent their days soaking up the sun, sharing lazy afternoons, and clinging to the joy of each other’s company. But as July turned into August, reality began to set in: they were about to start their journeys at different universities. The first day of college arrived, and Aiden felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. He stood in his new dorm room, surrounded by unpacked boxes, trying to focus on the tasks at hand. The bright walls and new furniture felt foreign, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that something significant was about to change.
His phone buzzed, jolting him from his thoughts. It was Tank: “How’s the dorm life? Ready for your first class?”
Aiden smiled, tapping out a quick reply: “It’s weird being here without you. But I’m excited! Class starts in an hour. Wish you were here!”
“Me too! Just remember, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. You got this!”Tank replied, his encouragement soothing Aiden’s nerves.
As the day unfolded, Aiden found himself immersed in a whirlwind of introductions and orientation activities. He made new friends, but every time he laughed or engaged with someone, a small part of him missed Tank’s presence. He had promised himself he would embrace this new chapter, but the distance felt palpable.
That evening, Aiden called Tank. “Hey! How was your first day?” he asked, eager to hear about Tank’s experiences.
“It was good! Met some cool people, but it’s definitely different,” Tank said, his voice crackling with excitement. “I miss you, though. The campus feels empty without you here.”
“Same! It’s just not the same vibe without you,” Aiden replied, a hint of sadness creeping in. “I wish we could be exploring this together.”
“We will be,” Tank assured him. “Just think of all the stories we’ll have to share when we visit each other.”
Aiden nodded, although uncertainty lingered in his heart. “Yeah, I know. But sometimes, I worry about losing what we have. It’s so easy to drift apart with everything going on.”
“Don’t think like that. We’re committed to each other. Remember our pact?” Tank’s voice was steady, anchoring Aiden amidst his swirling thoughts.
“I know,” Aiden said, trying to shake off the doubt. “I just can’t help but worry.”
“Let’s set up a schedule for our calls and FaceTime dates. Regular check-ins to keep us connected,” Tank suggested. “How about every Sunday evening?”
“That sounds great! I love that idea,” Aiden replied, feeling a spark of hope. “It’ll give us something to look forward to.”
As the days turned into weeks, Aiden settled into his college routine. He attended classes, made new friends, and even joined a few clubs, but he often found himself comparing everything to his time with Tank. Late-night study sessions lacked the energy of their shared laughter, and group outings felt incomplete without his boyfriend by his side.
Despite their weekly calls, Aiden felt a growing distance, both emotionally and physically. Tank was thriving at his school, making friends and embracing new experiences, while Aiden often felt lost in the crowd, struggling to find his footing.
One Sunday evening, as they sat in their respective rooms, Aiden couldn’t hold back his feelings any longer. “Tank, can we talk? I’m feeling a bit off lately,” he admitted.
“Of course! What’s going on?” Tank asked, concern filling his voice.
“I don’t know, it’s just… I’m happy for you, but I can’t shake this feeling of loneliness. I miss you so much,” Aiden confessed, feeling the weight of his emotions.
“I miss you too, Aiden. More than I can say,” Tank replied softly. “But we’re in this together. It’s okay to feel lost sometimes. You’re not alone in this.”
“I know, but I want to be there with you. I feel like I’m fading into the background here,” Aiden admitted, his voice trembling.
Tank paused, and Aiden could almost hear him thinking. “Listen, it’s completely normal to feel this way, especially since everything has changed so quickly. But we can still make this work. Let’s plan a visit soon, okay? I want to show you around my campus.”
“That would be amazing!” Aiden said, his heart lifting at the thought. “I can’t wait to see you.”
They spent the rest of the call making plans for Aiden’s visit, exchanging ideas about what they wanted to do and where they would go. It felt good to reconnect, and Aiden felt the tension in his chest begin to ease.
As they ended the call, Aiden reflected on their conversation. The distance was hard, but it didn’t have to define their relationship. They were committed to each other, and that meant they could navigate these challenges together.
Over the next few days, Aiden focused on building his own life while keeping Tank close in his heart. He joined study groups, attended campus events, and even met up with classmates for lunch. Slowly but surely, he began to carve out his own space at college.
When the day finally came for Aiden to visit Tank, he felt a rush of excitement. The car ride to Tank’s campus was filled with anticipation, and Aiden couldn’t wait to be reunited with the person who meant so much to him.
As he pulled into the parking lot and spotted Tank waiting by the entrance, Aiden’s heart raced. The moment their eyes met, a wave of familiarity and warmth washed over him.
“Hey! You made it!” Tank exclaimed, rushing over and wrapping Aiden in a tight embrace.
“I missed you so much!” Aiden replied, squeezing him back. In that moment, all the distance and uncertainty faded away.
As they stepped onto Tank’s campus together, Aiden felt a renewed sense of hope. They were still navigating uncharted waters, but together, they could face anything. The love they shared was worth fighting for, no matter the distance.
