The rain came down in a steady rhythm as Emii sat by the window, watching the water streak down the glass like silent tears. The soft patter of drops hitting the pavement outside should have been soothing, but her heart raced in anticipation. Dennis's message still lingered in her mind—*"We need to talk."* Four words that could mean everything or nothing, but Emii's instincts told her this conversation was going to change everything.
She glanced down at the crumpled piece of paper in her hand, the unfamiliar name and address staring back at her like a taunt. Who was this person? What was Dennis doing with this? The possibilities swirled in her mind, each one darker than the last. She tried to shake the feeling of dread, but it clung to her like a second skin.
Her phone buzzed again. This time, it was Michell.
*I'm here if you need me.*
Just seeing her best friend's message made her feel a little better. Michell had always been there, through every high and low, every uncertainty. Emii typed out a quick reply, her fingers trembling slightly as she hit send.
*Thanks. I'll let you know how it goes.*
The sound of Dennis's car pulling up outside snapped Emii out of her thoughts. She took a deep breath, folding the piece of paper and tucking it back into Dennis's jacket pocket, where she'd found it earlier. Part of her wanted to confront him immediately, to demand answers, but another part of her wasn't ready for what those answers might be.
As she grabbed her umbrella and opened the door, she spotted Dennis standing next to his car, his tall, rugged frame silhouetted against the dim streetlights. He looked up as she approached, his expression unreadable. For a moment, they simply stood there, the rain falling between them like a veil.
"You ready?" Dennis asked, his voice low but gentle.
Emii nodded, though she didn't feel ready at all. There was an undercurrent to his words, something tense and final. She could feel it in the way he looked at her, as if he were carrying the weight of a thousand secrets on his shoulders.
Dennis opened the passenger door for her, and she slipped inside, her heart pounding in her chest. As he slid into the driver's seat, she noticed how his hands gripped the steering wheel—tight, almost too tight. The tension in the car was palpable, thick enough to choke on.
They drove in silence, the rain tapping steadily on the roof, creating a hypnotic rhythm that matched the beat of Emii's racing heart. She kept stealing glances at him, trying to read his expression, but Dennis was a closed book. His jaw was clenched, his eyes focused on the road ahead, and the storm outside mirrored the storm brewing between them.
"Where are we going?" Emii finally asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Dennis didn't answer right away. His eyes flicked to the rearview mirror, and then he exhaled, long and slow. "Somewhere private. We need to talk without any interruptions."
Emii's stomach twisted. "What's this about?"
He hesitated, and that hesitation only made her anxiety spike higher. "There are things you don't know, Emii. Things I should have told you a long time ago."
She swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the edge of her seat. "Like what?"
Dennis was silent for a moment, and then he spoke, his voice low and edged with guilt. "You deserve to know the truth. About me. About my past."
Emii's heart dropped into her stomach. The truth? She had always sensed there was more to Dennis than he let on, but she had never pressed him for details. She didn't want to know. Not really. Because knowing meant confronting the fact that her life with Dennis was built on secrets. And once those secrets were out, there would be no going back.
