IT WAS EERILY QUIET that November night. Olivia was alone in her Los Angeles home, seeing as her sister had been in Argentina whilst her best friend still resided in Charleston for filming. She'd been alone for nearly a week now, but the quiet was slightly calming.
The brunette was resided on the lush couch resided in the center of her living room. She had her favorite knitted blanket laid over her legs with a bowl of popcorn by her hip as she watched the digital image of Gilmore Girls dance across her screen.
But, that had all come to a quit halt when she heard a loud bang of her front door.
She'd jumped slightly. It was nearly midnight on a Wednesday night. She hadn't been expecting anyone. Their house was gate protected. She knew whomever was at her door she knew closel, so, she'd pressed pause and pushed herself to her feet before padding over to the door.
It was a slight shock to see her best friend on the other side of the door. Katrina's jet black hair laid across her shoulders and she had her hands stuffed in her sweatshirt pocket. "Hi..." she muttered slowly.
"Hey," Olivia greets back. "What's going on? Are you alright?"
Katrina seemed as if she was almost hallucinating. She was starting blankly at the wall, not quite meeting Olivia's eyes and she sniffled as if she had spent the past thirty minutes crying. Olivia realized she had when she'd met her friend's eyes. Her eyes were puffy and bloodshot. "Not really. Can I come in?"
Olivia wasted little to no time before nodding her head and stepping aside. Katrina stepped forward, following after her as she stood and stared blankly at her friend whilst she stood in the center of the hallway. "Kat, what's going on?"
There was a brief moment of silence before disaster struck. "Sam and I broke up."
Olivia had to fight the urge to gasp at the sudden news. She never could have seen this coming, it seemed nearly impossible. How the hell... they were a perfect couple--a match made in heaven, if you will. And they'd been together for a near decade, how could they have possibly broken up.
"Oh, my God," Olivia mutters slowly. "What-- I mean, are you okay?"
Katrina shakes her head, the small movement triggering the waterfall of tears that flood from her eyes. "No," she sobs out before Olivia crashes her arms around her friend. The brunette holds her close, feeling her arms drape loosely around her body as she sobs into her shoulder nearly broke her and all she could think about was one question:
What the fuck happened?
Olivia convinced Katrina to take a seat on the couch. She'd gotten her a glass of water and let her cry on her shoulder for a near hour before she'd began to ask any questions. She didn't want to press or pressure her. Clearly, this had broke her and Olivia didn't want to shatter her.
She just simply couldn't fathom what the hell had happened?
"Are you ready to talk about it?" Olivia glances at her friend from the corner of her eye. She had her arm wrapped around Katrina's shoulders, rubbing gently as the noriette cried on her shoulder.
Katrina sniffles a couple times before lifting her head and wiping her tears. "It, uhm... it started a couple months ago, I guess." Olivia nodded her head as she turned her body to face her friend completely, listening to what she'd said intently. "I-- I told him that... that I was ready to settle down, you know?"
Olivia's brows furrowed for a moment but the knowledge came to her soon enough. "You were ready marriage."
Katrina nods slowly. "You know, he'd always told me it'd happen eventually, I just... I was ready for it to happen. But... he... he, uhm... he said he wasn't ready."
Olivia gulped silently. She wished she couldn't have seen it coming, but it made sense. He'd been used to living a certain lifestyle. The classic lifestyle of a 26-year-old man. He loved to have fun. He loved to go out with his friends, get drunk at bars and clubs and go to parties. There was nothing wrong with it, but there certainly wasn't any room for marriage in that equation.
"The past few months we'd been arguing a lot and-- and we just couldn't see eye-to-eye," Katrina wipes a stray tear. "Then we sat down tonight and decided it would be best for us to break up."
"Oh, babe..."
"We wanted different things and had different visions of the future." Katrina shrugs, "I guess it's for at the better."
Olivia felt her heart break for her friend. She'd known how much Katrina loved him and she'd known how much Sam loved her. And it still didn't make sense.
The Madden girl didn't say anything more to Katrina that night. She didn't try to convince her it was the right decision or the wrong decision. She didn't try to tell her she was better off without him. and she didn't dare tell her it was for the better.
She just held her while she sobbed on her shoulder all night. And by the time the clock struck three in the morning, she still didn't leave. She stayed the night with Olivia and within days Olivia was her very own emotional support companion. Within weeks, they could never be closer.
And then within months, Katrina Stuart would slowly begin to resent Olivia Madden for all that she'd done.
