"Up, already young lady, or I'm putting all your chocolates to arson!" Aanchal snarled the final warning directed towards her little eleven-year-old daughter. It was already seven, which meant they only had an hour more to make it to the parent-student-teacher annual fun programme.

Every year when the day arrived, her daughter threw tantrums to wake up on time, not that she didn't do it on regular days, but they were just too prominent on this particular day. Aanchal knew very well the why behind her behavior, even though she never asked her and she never complained about it vocally. It ached her heart but she never let her spirits be down. She was gonna give her daughter everything, it was a promise to her own conscience.

A silent groan fell into her ears, and in a moment her waist was caught by tiny little hands. A smile spread on her face as she turned to see her daughter rubbing her eyes with a frown etched on her face.

"They've included swimming too, this year." Aanchal said aloud, whisking the egg yolks in a bowl.

"Exactly why it sucks more than last year, this time!" her daughter groaned, resting her head on Aanchal's waist and cleverly dozing off there.

"Aashu?" Aanchal called her out in her sweetest voice, before harshly turning around and jerking the little kid off.

"Don't doze off everywhere you stand!"

"Maa!" Aashi groaned, crying in annoyance.

"Don't Maa me! We have to leave in an hour! Get ready fast and be sure to grab the swimsuit package I have placed on your bed on the way back!" Her reprimanding voice, scary to Aashi's ears, wiped off the last remnants of sleep from her eyes.

"Maa. I don't like going to school on this day." Aashi spoke rather softly, alerting Aanchal. Something twitched inside her heart at the fallen face of her daughter. Immediately keeping the eggs aside, she crouched down to reach her height.

Holding her torso, she asked worried, "Why baby?"

It was the first time Aashi was going to open up about this to her. She felt terrified of what she could ask her. Her dad? The insolent dog who left her the moment he got to know Aanchal was pregnant with her? She hadn't lied about anything to her daughter but she hadn't exposed the whole truth either, there was some extent to what an eleven-year-old heart could take afterall. She was tired of watching her words when speaking about the man she loathed in front of her, but right now, her sullen face was rather much more painful than any haunting memory of that man.

"You know Atharv? My classmate since Grade 2." Aanchal nodded her head recollecting the memories of that little man. He was one naughty kid she had always seen teachers complaining about. His guardian, perhaps, his uncle who was also the school's sports teacher always had to hear from teachers about his shenanigans.

"Yes? What about him?"

"Ever since the school introduced this day, he always rubs it in my face when I lose. And you know, I'm not good at sports. I don't like this day because it gives him a chance to have an upper hand. All the other times, I can defeat him. Just not this day. Besides, Devansh Sir is his uncle, it's so unfair he always takes part with him!"
