pt. ii of 'men like you'
The dusk was slow approaching. The sky was slowly welcoming the slight remnants of twinkling stars. Blush lilac hues stretched over the horizon highlighting the gulmohar tree at the end of park. The academic year was approaching the end dancing around the rough slaps of March end-term examinations. The remnants of fiery red blooms making an entrance on the Gulmohar tree to increase its flamboyance.
Fiery red. The Gulmohar Tree reminded Devansh a lot about a certain lady who he had spent most of the past year with. Yet, he had only scratched the surface of the depths of her.
Aanchal was not someone who liked speaking much about her past or even present feelings for that matter. She was a rather straightforward woman who stuck with the topic whenever she had a conversation and kept her personal things to herself. However, off-late he had seen a change. Her eyes. Her eyes had been betraying her subtle and reserved personality. The stolen glances and gazes that lingered for longer than usual on him had messed his mind lately. He didn't want to make assumptions, but then again he didn't want to let go of the little hope he had started building in his heart. And, so he kept quiet. Kept quiet and silently gauged her expressions, trying to read the message hidden in them.
That's exactly what he was doing right now. Seated on a park bench beside her, sipping on a boba tea, she was ranting for a change, about her life. He had a soft smile sitting on his lips much to his oblivion and his gaze fixed on her face animatedly spitting the anger out.
"And to top that, Aashi has become such a spoiled kid! She'll wake me up at 2 in the morning, demanding for a pizza. Why? Not because she's hungry but because her crush was having it, he sent her a snap or something of it, and now she wants to send the same back! I mean I understand girl, you have a crush, I've been there too, but you can't act that childish in love now, can you? This teenage phase is the worst, I swear! Has Atharv also started showing such tantrums, or is it just my child who's satan's best friend?! " Aanchal's eyes were wide enough to crack a chuckle out of Devansh.
"It's not funny, Dev!" She deadpanned.
"I never said it was. Besides, yeah, Atharv has been like that. Last night, he asked me if he could get a crew cut, because apparently it's cool and girls like it. I had a hard time recovering from the laughter it induced." He finished, slightly laughing.
"See. I knew it. It's like that, everywhere!" She sighed, shaking her head.
"You know..." Her voice reduced decibels.
"I love her, a lot. And there's nothing I would want in the world more than seeing her happy and safe. But.."
"But?" Devansh peered, lowering his head a little.
"Sometimes, I just wish I could catch a break, you know. Just one day of it would be enough. But, then I feel guilty to even think of that. I feel like a bad mother all of a sudden." Her face supported a frown. She felt guilty just speaking it out aloud, the feeling eating her insides with disgust for herself.
