THE 2015 SONG OF THE SUMMER
Let's skip the introductions. We're facing a serious crisis; it's mid-July and we still haven't gotten our trashy pop hit of the summer. You know their type- overplayed on every single radio station, lyrics obsessively reblogged on tumblr, a constant background track for videos everywhere. Of course, we did get Trap Queen, but that was all the way back in February. And I'm not deluded enough to say that Uptown Funk and Shake it off weren't hits in their own right- just that they weren't released at the right time.
It just brings up one very important question; what is 2015's Song of the Summer? Sure, hits like Want to Want me and Shut Up and Dance charted recently, but they've only been dropping in rank, leaving the question unanswered. Luckily, we bring to you a dash of speculation, so read on to find out what songs we think could be the next big hit of 2015!
Popular Choices
Obviously, there are some songs that many music websites have predicted to be the Song of the Summer- they're already on the charts, the artists have a decent fan following, and to top it all off, they're insanely catchy. Here are the frontrunners for summer 2015!
1. It'd be ridiculous not to include Cheerleader by Omi on this list! Though this song has been around for a few weeks, it currently sits comfortably at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon. Of course, it's easy to see why people love this song- it reminds us of Waves (opb Mr. Probz) in a lot of ways. The beat, vocals, and reggae roots make for a chill song, and the remix isn't half bad either.
2. Can't Feel My Face by The Weeknd is another obvious frontrunner here- The combination of a well-established artist with many other hits under his belt and the sheer catchiness of the song make it a noticeable contender. Can't Feel My Face is already pretty high up on the charts, and is expected to rise even further.
3. Worth It by Fifth Harmony has also been making some waves recently. After their last two hits- Boss and Miss Moving On- and their X-factor success, it's understandable that these girls have gained a huge fan following in the past two years. Worth It represents Fifth Harmony's first foray into the Billboard Top 15 (and is also, surprisingly, the first girl group to do that since the Pussycat Dolls 'Jai Ho' in 2009). With help from the amazing saxophone loop and peppy beat, Worth It stands a pretty good chance of being the face of summer 2015.
Honorable Mentions: Fight Song by Rachel Platten, This Summer's Gonna Hurt by Maroon 5, Where Are U Now by Jack U and Justin Bieber.
Underdogs
Let's face it- as unlikely a choice as some of our favorite songs are, we're all rooting for the underdogs. These few have just managed to scrape by into our top 3, so look no further for our unlikely picks of the day!
1. I'll be the first to admit it- Panic! At the Disco is my ultimate pop-punk weakness, which makes sense when you consider how often I've had Hallelujah on repeat for the past few weeks. The meaning behind the lyrics, as well as the sheer power the gospel harmonies hold make for yet another unforgettable hit. And Hallelujah may still have a chance- it recently peaked at 40 on the Billboard charts- it isn't as much as the others, but it sure is something. And yes, it isn't exactly pop- but a girl can dream, right?
2. Search Party by Sam Bruno is another song that has tons of potential. Though it is part of the Paper Towns soundtrack and should be gaining traction from that alone, we suspect that it'll really make it big around July 24th, when Paper Towns is scheduled to release. Yes, it is a bit of a long shot, but when you think about it, it seems very, very plausible, seeing as it could be considered the next 'Boom Clap'. It also has that three-piece melody made popular by M.I.A.'s Paper Planes, which is super popular in pop music at the moment.
3. Featuring an artist that's bagged a few hits already, Marvin Gaye by Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor is another fan favorite for Song of the Summer. It has a vintage feel to it, especially with the Marvin Gaye references, and is compared frequently to Uptown Funk because of its revitalization of an older genre and its memorable hook. It might be a bit slow for the summer crowd, but it does stand a chance.
