Sunday 09.29.24
The two days leading up to the Portugal trip passed in a blur. I spent most of the time packing, running errands, and mentally preparing for what would undoubtedly be an interesting week. Going on a trip with seven guys, especially this group, was bound to bring its fair share of chaos, drama, and maybe even a few moments of peace—if I was lucky.
It was early Sunday morning when we all met at the airport. I was running on minimal sleep, courtesy of Pedri's late-night texts. He kept bringing up our almost-hookup, which I kept trying to brush off, but knowing him, he wasn't about to let it go.
The airport was packed with people, even at 6 AM. We were all dragging ourselves through security, looking like a mess. João, of course, seemed unbothered, sunglasses perched on his face, chatting easily with Ferran and Fermin. The rest of us? Zombies.
As we made our way to the gate, I caught up with Ansu, who looked way too energetic for this hour. "You look way too alive for 6 AM," I muttered.
"Hey, someone's gotta keep the vibe up! Plus, we're going to Portugal! João's been hyping it up for days. We gotta be ready to party."
"Party? Dude, I just want to sleep for the first two days," I groaned.
Ansu laughed, patting my back. "Don't worry, we'll have plenty of time to rest. But I heard João's family throws a mean barbecue, so brace yourself."
That perked me up a bit. I loved a good barbecue.
We finally boarded the plane, and luckily, João had sorted out first-class tickets for all of us. I settled into my seat, sandwiched between Pablo and Ale, who were already bickering over the window seat.
"Can you two please act like grown-ups for once?" I sighed, leaning back in my seat.
"Tell him to stop acting like he's five," Ale grumbled, giving Pablo a playful shove.
Pablo grinned and crossed his arms. "You're just mad because you lost the coin toss. It's not my fault I'm lucky."
I tuned out their banter and closed my eyes, trying to catch up on some sleep before we landed. But that didn't last long. Pedri, who was sitting across the aisle, poked my arm to get my attention.
"Excited for Portugal?" he asked, his voice teasing like he knew something I didn't.
"Yeah, I guess so. You?" I replied, not giving him the satisfaction of knowing I was still thinking about the other night.
He leaned in closer, lowering his voice. "I'm looking forward to some quality time, if you know what I mean." His lips curled into that signature smirk, and I had to resist the urge to roll my eyes.
"Yeah, well, I'll be enjoying that quality time with everyone else," I shot back, making sure to sound uninterested.
His smirk deepened, but before he could say anything more, João interrupted from his seat in front of us.
"Hey, what are you guys whispering about? Keep it PG back there!" he joked, pulling his headphones off.
I chuckled, grateful for the distraction. "Just talking about how we're going to avoid you all week," I teased.
"Oh, is that right? Good luck with that, 'cause you're not escaping us!" João grinned before turning his attention back to his music.
The rest of the flight was mostly peaceful, except for Ferran's loud snores and Ale's constant whining about needing to pee. But soon enough, we were descending into Portugal.
As we landed, João's excitement was contagious. He couldn't stop talking about all the places he wanted to show us, from his favorite beach spots to the local food his mom made. "My parents are so excited to meet you guys," João said as we all gathered our bags.
"You think they'll like us?" Fermin asked, throwing his arm around João.
"Like you? They'll love you, man. You're practically family now."
We were met by warm weather and sunny skies as we stepped out of the airport and into a couple of vans João had rented. We split into two groups again, with João driving one and Pedri taking the wheel for the other.
The drive to Viseu was breathtaking. The roads were lined with lush greenery, and in the distance, you could see the mountains. It was different from Barcelona, more peaceful, like the whole country was inviting you to just take a breath and relax.
We arrived at the Airbnb João had booked, and it was massive—an old stone villa with a modern interior, nestled in the countryside. There were vineyards nearby, and the scent of fresh air and earth filled my lungs. It felt like we'd stepped into a dream.
"Holy shit, João, you didn't tell us we'd be staying in a palace," Ansu said, wide-eyed as we all took in the sight.
João just shrugged, grinning. "Only the best for you guys."
We all dragged our suitcases inside, staking claims on rooms. Of course, Pedri made a comment about rooming near me, but I pretended not to hear. After settling in, we met João's parents, who welcomed us like long-lost family members. His mom, Carla, hugged each of us like she'd known us forever.
"João talks so much about all of you! You're always welcome here," she said, ushering us into the large kitchen where a feast was already being prepared.
It didn't take long for everyone to loosen up, and soon enough, we were sitting around the long dining table, plates filled with traditional Portuguese food. It was comforting, a reminder that despite all the drama and tension sometimes, we were a family of sorts.
After dinner, João's dad suggested we head out to a local bar to kick off the trip properly. Everyone was on board except me. I was exhausted and really wanted a quiet night.
"You sure you don't want to come?" Pedri asked, standing in the doorway to my room as I unpacked.
"Yeah, I think I'll sit this one out. I'm beat," I said, trying to avoid his gaze.
He leaned against the doorframe, a small smile on his face. "Alright, but you'll miss out on some fun."
"I'll survive," I laughed.
As he left, I collapsed onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling. Portugal was already beautiful, and the trip was off to a good start, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something big was about to happen.
What that was, I wasn't sure, but with this group? It was only a matter of time.
