Orpheus' fingers hovered above the keyboard as he scrolled through an endless string of invoices. The monotony of the task was mind-numbing, each line of numbers blurring into the next, but it was part of the job. He'd benefit from hiring an assistant. He clicked through another document—something about a shipment delay—and sighed. For the past hour, his life had been reduced to tracking the most mundane supplies. Staplers, paper clips, printer ink. His day-to-day existence was a far cry from grandiose.
He adjusted his chair slightly, scrolling down through the logistics report. The office's stock of blue pens was running low—again. How riveting. He made a mental note to reorder more. The irony wasn't lost on him: here he was, a manager, a figure of power in his own little world, reduced to micromanaging the office's dwindling pen supply.
Another email pinged in his inbox. This time, it was a notice about the annual employee engagement survey results, full of suggestions about break room snacks and requests for quieter keyboards. Orpheus clicked through the report, eyes scanning the metrics. None of it really mattered to him. He had no interest in the complaints of anyone but hismelf. His mind wandered as he scrolled, but he forced himself to focus on the numbers.
As he absentmindedly clicked through a few more emails, the door to his office flew open with a loud bang, jolting his neck to attention and his mind back to earth. Orpheus's eyes snapped to the doorway. Of course, who else but Norton would barge in so soon?
"What the fuck is this?!" Norton demanded, waving a crumpled piece of paper in his hand. He stormed into the room, his face twisted in anger as he glared at Orpheus. "I thought we had an agreement! One more strike, and they fire me. Are you trying to screw me over?"
Orpheus blinked, barely reacting to Norton's outburst. He didn't bother to stand or even straighten his posture. Instead, he just gestured lazily to the chair in front of him with an amused smirk tugging at his lips. "Why don't you sit down, Mr. Campbell?" Orpheus said smoothly, his voice calm, almost bored. "Let's talk this through like reasonable adults, shall we? After all, you want to be treated with respect, right?"
Norton's eyes narrowed, but he didn't sit. "What the hell is this about, Orpheus? Are you mocking me now? You write me up for some bullshit, and now you're acting like it's nothing?"
Orpheus sighed, this time louder, more theatrical, and leaned forward slightly. "Norton, did you even bother to read the write-up?" He raised an eyebrow, the faintest hint of condescension creeping into his tone. "Why don't you sit with me and take a closer look?" His voice grew deeper and far quieter as he continued. "After all, we can't do much more than talk during working hours, can we?"
Norton frowned, glancing down at the crumpled paper in his hand. His eyes scanned the document again, his brows furrowing as he re-read the lines: Extended lunch periods in violation of company policy. Orpheus's smirk widened as he watched Norton's expression shift. "It's just an automated slap on the wrist, nothing I even wrote," Orpheus explained, his voice patronizing. "Nothing personal. This is just a friendly reminder to stick to policy. I wouldn't have even known you got it if not for your little self-report... but it will be reflected in your quarterly assessment."
Norton's jaw clenched, the paper crumpling again in his fist. He was furious, but now it felt ridiculous. Still standing, he scowled down at the seated Orpheus. Though Orpheus was below him, how did he always make Norton feel so small? Norton felt his jaw tense up, and his head sent him a droning pain as he watched Orpheus gesture again to the seat before him.
"But," Orpheus continued, leaning back in his chair, his fingers steepled in front of him, "it's interesting, isn't it? How quickly you assumed this was about us. Maybe," his voice dropped to a whisper, sharp with amusement, "you're the one making things personal. Let's chat."
