CAROLINE BUXBAUM, A SIX year old girl who had a strange liking towards all things that came with a boy in her kindergarten class was attempting to fall asleep so she could wake the next morning and return to the classroom she loved so much.
but she couldn't. sleep usually came naturally to the girl, counting the glowing stars on her ceiling normally put her to sleep extremely fast. but after counting as high as she knew how to, caroline still lied awake.
after a few more minutes of turning from side to side, looking at all the drawing she and her mom had hung on the wall together that she had done in class the previous days, and sleep still not reaching her, she decided she would go find her mom.
she jumped from her bed, warm feet meeting the cold wood floors, she slowly tiptoed towards her door. the handle turned slowly as she pulled the door open to reveal a dark, but cozy hallway.
the door creaked while callie closed it, one it was clicked back shut, she bolted to her parents room, afraid that the monsters might catch her if she walked.
now standing outside the bedrooms double doors, callie looked through the crack in the door, her eyes meeting her moms. she jumped a little, afraid that her mom might be mad that she was still awake. but she wasn't. she never was.
"come here, sweet girl." she heard her mom whisper just loud enough for her to hear over the tv. not wasting another second, the little girl ran through the doors and leaped onto the bed, climbing into her moms lap.
"what's this?" she whispered to her mom, pointing at the screen in front of them. she giggled into her moms ears, a pure giggle filled with joy. she loved the idea of secrets, the idea of having something that just she knew. so every time she whispered, she pretended she was telling a secret.
"this, my friend, is my favorite movie. how to lose a guy in ten days." her mom spoke in her usual tone. pure and full of life.
"what is it about?" callie continued to whisper with her mom, not breaking eye contact with the tv. there was something so captivating about the girl and boy on the screen. the way the it's were written, red and in a bouncy font. the beautiful yellow dress and blond hair the girl with fit with.
she wanted to know everything about it.
"well, you will just have to find out." he mom laughed, pulling her little girl close and starting the movie from the beginning.
and from that moment on, caroline buxbaum wanted her whole life to be like the movies her mom had taught her to love so much. everything about romcoms had kept her in a chokehold. and it's all she can think about, now and forever.
