5:00pm
As I walked out from the movie house I had only 2 things on my mind. A church and Johnny Cade. Why? I wondered the same thing. Those two things had no connection. Johnny Cade was my best bud. A church? An old one which smelled of bologna and cigarette smoke and burning wood. Don't ask me how I knew what it smelled like. I just knew. Johnny had never been to a church. His Ma and Pa are to busy arguing and hitting Johnny. So why would I think of those two things? I'm racking my brain when I hear a familiar voice. "Ponyboy, please wake up." I hear this voice a lot. Four times a day maybe. I know the voice. But I can never place it. I know it's in my head as well because when I bring it up to anyone else in my gang nobody says they can hear it. When I told Darry and Sodapop, Darry told me the same he always does. "It's probably in that head of yours Pony. I betcha. You never use it to think so it's probably conjuring voices to think for you." My older brother Darrel Curtis. How he loved to scrutinize me for things. As I'm walking down my alley toward my house, the voice cuts of and is replaced with a slightly different one before gently fading away. I'm ok with that. It lets me think of what my brain is trying to tell me. Johnny Cade and church. How could those things go to together? As I'm racking my brain, I'm blindsided by a figure who when comes into view is Johnny himself."Heya PB, Dally, Two-Bit, and the rest of the gang are hittin the lot tonight it's gonna be a nice rumble between us and some Soc's. They knocked Two-Bit up real good while you were at the movie house. Jumped him and took that nice blade he got. Two-Bit wants it back and needed a little help from the gang. You in PB?" He asked me. I stood for a moment. Those no good, blue mustang owning, pieces of white trash.
"I'm surprised Two-Bit got jumped he's wildin sometimes y'know? Two-Bit is tough" I say as I stare deep into his eyes. Johnny looked at me for a long time and just thought.
"Yea well the Socs are tuff and tough." He paused for a moment and turned toward the west. "Yknow Pony sure is a nice sunset. Golden hues. Sure is to bad it gotta go." He finished. I looked to the west. I've seen this all before. I've heard him say that before.
"You've said that before. I know it. Somewhere you said it." I say. My head begins to hurt and my legs feel wobbly. I begin to shake and everything feels wrong. Johnny's face shifts and turns. "Johnny...nothing gold can stay remember?" I ask him. He seems surprise as I begin to drop to my knees.
"PB you don't look to good. Maybe it ain't a good idea for you to be in the rumble. C'mon I'll walk you home. Darry'll know what what to do." My mind begins to wander as I lean on Johnny for support. Johnny Cade and a church...I could feel the gears turning in my head. What day was it? Where was I? "Come on now Pony! Think!" Darry's voice keeps yelling at me in my head. "Use that brain of yours." We approach the silver gate of my house. Soda is sitting on the porch with Steve. Soda looked up at us both. He began to run toward me but I don't remember much after cuz I just passed out. Everything is black as it feels like a warm wash cloth was blanketed over me. I can't think about how Johnny and a small church are connected because I got distracted very easily. "Ponyboy wake up!" The voice calls. It's always with that voice. "Will you shut it?" I call back. It doesn't listen and repeats the same thing over and over until I finally wake up.
