The monsters were closing in fast. I could feel the shift in the water around us, their presence like a growing storm, thick with venom and hunger. Tentacles writhed and lashed through the dark water, moving with unnatural speed, forcing us deeper into the trench. The glow of the gem was far below, but it felt impossibly distant with every passing second.

Nicole’s breath came quickly, her grip tightening around the venom gun. We have to get to it now, or we won’t get out at all. Her voice echoed through our link, raw with urgency.

I glanced over my shoulder. The sea monsters—their glowing eyes fixated on us—had multiplied. Every movement they made churned the water into a violent swirl, their jaws snapping as they closed in from all sides. Our halos, which normally burned as beacons of heavenly light, now cast an eerie glow in the depths, flickering like trapped stars. The light wasn’t enough to hold back the creeping darkness—or the venomous creatures that haunted it.

Keep going! I called through the link, my wings beating furiously as I pushed forward. Nicole was just ahead of me, her sleek form cutting through the water with precision, her eyes locked on the faint glow of the gem far below. The soft light of her halo barely cut through the dense water, but it was enough to keep her in sight as we raced through the murky depths.

But the creatures weren’t giving up. One lunged at us, its enormous body careening through the water with a horrifying speed. I barely had time to react. I spun in place, Ye, my scythe, carving through the water in a wide arc. The blade connected with the creature’s tentacle, severing it cleanly. The creature let out a guttural screech, its black blood clouding the water, but it didn’t stop. Another tentacle shot forward, aiming directly for Nicole.

“Watch out!” I shouted, my halo flaring brighter in response to my surge of panic.

Nicole twisted at the last second, her body dipping low as the tentacle passed just above her. She fired her gun, the neon green liquid cutting through the water and striking the creature’s eye. It recoiled, letting out a high-pitched shriek, but more of them were coming, their eyes glowing, their massive forms cutting off any chance of escape. My halo pulsed in sync with my heartbeat, casting ghostly reflections on the slick, slimy skin of the beasts as they swarmed closer.

They’re everywhere! Nicole’s voice was tinged with frustration, her thoughts racing through the link.

Just keep going! I fired back, my focus narrowing on the trench floor below. The gem’s glow was getting stronger, more tangible now, but the creatures were pushing harder, their frenzy intensifying as we got closer. They knew what we were after, and they weren’t going to let us take it without a fight.

We pushed deeper, the pressure of the water growing heavier around us, but our angelic bodies withstood it. The narrow walls of the trench hemmed us in, forcing us into a deadly game of speed and precision. Nicole was fast, her wings propelling her forward in sharp, fluid movements, her halo casting just enough light for us to avoid jagged rocks. But the creatures were relentless. One of them surged forward again, its massive mouth open, rows of sharp teeth glinting in the darkness.

I swung Ye in a powerful arc, the blade slicing through another tentacle as I swerved out of the way of its jaws. But the water was thick with venom and blood now, making every movement more difficult, more dangerous. My muscles burned, and my halo dimmed slightly as exhaustion crept in. But I couldn’t stop. Not now.

Finally, the gem came into full view—a glowing, pulsating stone embedded in the rocky trench floor, its light casting eerie shadows across the walls. The creatures grew even more agitated, their movements frantic as they tried to close the gap between us and the gem.
