GABRIEL'S DORM

Walking into the room, Jessica, Esmeralda's roommate and best friend, immediately bombarded her with questions.

"I have been calling you! Why weren't you answering? What did you do to Mr. Gabriel? His lackeys were here, but they already left. They came looking for you! What is happening between you two?" Jessica finally paused, taking a deep breath after her rapid-fire interrogation.

"I'm sorry, Jess. My phone was on silent. I had to rush here when I saw your missed calls," Esmeralda sighed, dropping her purse and flopping onto the bed, lying on her back with her arms stretched wide. "He fired me," Esmeralda replied flatly.

"What?!" Jessica exclaimed, disbelief washing over her. "Why?!" She demanded, her eyes widening.

"The bastard wanted to sleep with me, but I refused. He even tried to force himself on me, and I slapped him," Esmeralda explained.

Jessica's eyes grew wide in utter disbelief. "You did what?!"

Her heart began to drum in her ears, and she swayed a little, overwhelmed by the shocking news. She sat down beside Esmeralda on the bed, her mind racing. This meant Esmeralda had just signed her death warrant with Mr. Gabriel.

Esmeralda sat up and faced Jessica, concern etched across her features. "What was I supposed to do, Jess? Should I have let him have his way just to keep the job? No way! That is a hard no for me."

Jessica's gaze dropped to the floor. Esmeralda quickly picked up on her strange behavior, and it dawned on her. "Did you sleep with that bastard, Jess?"

Jessica was silent, her tongue tied.

"I'm asking you a question, Jessica." Esmeralda shook her gently, demanding an answer.

"Yes, I did!" Jessica exclaimed, nearly screaming as she pulled away from Esmeralda's grip.

Esmeralda was now the one in shock. She and Jessica had been tight friends, practically best friends since they started working for Gabriel on the same day. Their friendship had clicked immediately, despite the fact that Jessica worked at Gabriel's club while Esmeralda was at the fabric store. They had stayed close through it all.

Jessica had always been good to Esmeralda, especially when the other girls in the hostel treated her badly. Those girls seemed perpetually envious, and Esmeralda could never understand why.

They hadn't always been roommates. That arrangement came after Jessica's previous roommate quit her job. Esmeralda had requested a transfer to Jessica's room, escaping her own roommate, Eva, who had been unfairly mean to her. Luckily, the request was granted, and once they became roommates, their friendship blossomed even more. They were more like sisters than friends.
