The next day, Shadowpaw was cleaning out elders of their ticks. His ear twitched as Spottedleaf trotted over, her gaze glaring at him angrily. "I heard what you did last night." Spottedleaf started. "For now on, you'll eat last before the whole clan."
Shadowpaw nodded, lashing his tail in slight irritation. "I know, Spottedleaf. I'm sorry." Spottedleaf trotted over to him, putting her paw on his when he was taking out a tick.
"Shadowpaw, what was wrong with that kittypet? It's just a kittypet. Although, Bluestar thinks that he might be the fire." asked Spottedleaf.
Shadowpaw's entire body stiffened, remembering the prophecy that his mentor told him about. Fire alone can save our clan. "Rusty? The fire?" Shadowpaw snorted. "Ha. As if— sure his pelt may look like fire, but Rusty won't save any clan."
"Shadowpaw!" hissed Spottedleaf. "You best stop with this short-temperedness right now, and tell me what got you so angry at the kittypet."
Shadowpaw sighed, his ears flattening as he and his mentor sat down outside of the elders den. "It's just.. it's Rusty. He's an old friend of mine when I was called Two-Tone. We shared the same twoleg, but the male..." he paused.
"The male, one day, was shooting a dog for attacking their kit. But I was just coming out of my soft nest, and the male shot me in the eye. Rusty was there, he was right next to me. He saw my eye bleeding out and didn't help." explained Shadowpaw.
"I felt so betrayed... Rusty and I, we were so close. Like brothers, and everyday that we were together was treasured by both of us. Well, keyword being was." Shadowpaw hissed, curling his tail in hate.
Spottedleaf hummed, and saw two other clanmates called Lionheart and Whitestorm. "Hey, Shadowpaw. Lionheart and Whitestorm just got back from wherever they were going." said Spottedleaf, flicking Shadowpaw with her tail.
Shadowpaw looked at his tortoiseshell mentor, and looked back at Lionheart and Whitestorm. Whitestorm was Sandpaw's, another clanmate of theirs, mentor, so what is he doing with Lionheart? Shadowpaw spotted a flame-colored tom.
Unless...
Of course!
It was Rusty!
Rusty flashed his Forest-green eyes at Shadowpaw's frosty blue, and Shadowpaw death glared at Rusty. "I best get back to the medicine den..." said Spottedleaf awkwardly, trotting back to their den.
Shadowpaw twitched his ear angrily, choosing to stick around he took his place beside Graypaw. "Ooh, hey there's the kittypet!" Graypaw smirked but Shadowpaw circled his tail around Graypaw, and covered his longhaired friend's mouth.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Highrock for a clan meeting!" called Bluestar. All cats circled around the Highrock. Shadowpaw caught a glimpse of Rusty next to Lionheart and Whitestorm.
"ThunderClan needs more warriors," Bluestar started. "Never before had we so few apprentices in training."
Shadowpaw knew exactly where this was going and trotted towards the medicine den. "Not interested?" asked Spottedleaf, turning around and seeing her apprentice. "Nope..." sighed Shadowpaw, curling up in his nest.
"From this day forward, until he has earned his warrior name, this apprentice will be called Firepaw, in honor of his flame-colored coat." He heard Bluestar call and he also heard some cat trotting in.
He didn't bother to come and help as he settled down in his nest and faded into a mysterious dream where he woke up in a void. A transparent cat with starry patterns greeted him. "StarClan?" Shadowpaw squinted.
"Yes. I think you may know who I am, Shadowpaw." The cat hinted, winking at him in a familiar way. Shadowpaw tilted his head and a vision flashed before his eyes: A tortoiseshell tom fighting what looked like RiverClan cats then...
"Redtail? Are you...dead?"
Redtail nodded. "Listen, Shadowpaw. Whatever Tigerclaw tells you, don't trust him." He told the medicine cat apprentice. "Why are you not telling Spottedleaf this?" asked Shadowpaw, lashing his tail side to side.
"Because you were the only one I could access. Now I've got to go. Don't trust Tigerclaw."
Shadowpaw awoke with a jolt. He trotted out of the medicine den to see Ravenpaw, another apprentice, scramble up to the Highrock beside Bluestar and declare, "Redtail's dead!"
