An Unfortunate Trip

Since the morning nothing had showed any signs of the dark, omnious cloud, that was slowly, but surely forming above Eugene's head. The sun was shining-.. No. It wasn't. The sky is grey and colorless. But what more could you expect from an autumn day, right?
That's exactly what Eugene was thinking about, rubbing their cold hands in a weak attempt to warm them up. While standing in front of the pedestrian crossing, waiting for the green light to appear.
Unfortunately for them, they hasn't succeeded in warming their reddened skin.
"Why didn't I put on gloves today..? I knew it was going to be cold.." - Teenager sighed softly, having an awkward expression on their face, as they glanced at the traffic light, finally seeing it lighten up with the needed colour.
Quickly crossing the road, the mortal spotted his school friends: Luke, Joy and Oliver, standing near the school gates.
"Oh, hey, Eugene!" - The boy in yellow hoodie greeted them, waving his hand. The same did Joy and Oliver.
"Hey, guys.." - Eugene smiled slightly, approaching them and then stopping nearby. - "Why are you standing outside..? It's so cold out here.." - teen shivered and rubbed his shoulders to show how cold it is. Well, they probably already know that.
"Luke is waiting for his basketball buddies. And we stand here just for the company." - said Joy nonchalantly.
"He has a match with the other school's basketball team today. After the lunch."- Oliver popped in. Luke nodded at that, now having a confident smile.
"Wanna come and watch us win that game?" - Luke suddenly asked Eugene, who.. Wouldn't mind coming.. Luke is his friend.. And it's boring in school anyway..
"S-sure! I will definitely watch your play!" - Eugene answered quickly...
But at that moment the quartet saw a group of students approach them. It turned out that they're Luke's teammates. So now they all could go in school. Which made Eugene very happy, judging by how cold he is.
The lessons went on slowly.. And the students had to write a lot.. As if in purpose. By the lunch time Eugene felt like his very soul will leave his body at any moment.. Or that his hands will fall away from him, from how much they had written..
"Eugene! Are you coming- oh jeez, buddy, you look horrible.." - Joy, who was walking towards him stopped, studying teen's look. - "Let me guess, a lot to write and learn?" - She chuckled softly, crossing her arms over her chest. As Eugene lowered their head, confirming her assumption.
"Too much work.." - He complained, leaning back and gripping his school bag. - "Sometimes I feel like they do it just to make us feel miserable.." - Eugene shook his head, straightening up and looking at Joy.
"Haha, that's right! Okay, the match is starting in a few minutes! Come on!" - The girl exclaimed cheerfully, gripping Eugene's hand(which made the poor teen blush softly) and dragging him to the basketball court, where many students already sat.
"I asked Oliver to take the best seats for us!" - Joy kept talking, while Eugene followed her, amazed and embarrassed at the same time.
Soon enough they were sitting toghether in the middle of the sitting place. Joy said the truth.. These sits are the best. Eugene could see everything from here.
Finally the teams showed up. The crowd cheered happily, clapping, whistling and shouting. Eugene winced at the sudden and loud noise, but then smiled shyly, watching his friend wave to the students.
Then the judge came out of the school, holding a yellow whistle in his hand.. The old looking man stopped in the middle of the court, raising his hand to warn the players..
Everything seemed to slow down at that very moment.. All people were waiting intently... And then the whistle's high-pitched sound piercered the air. The game has began!
To be honest Eugene weren't a fan of sport, but seeing how passionate these people are.. And how much they love this game.. Made him feel a bit jealous. But he quickly pushed that feeling aside. He can't be jealous of his friend for simply finding his passion. But maybe that nasty feeling was from the fact that he, himself still doesn't know what  his passion is. He should find it sooner or later though. Or maybe he just doesn't understand that he has already done that. Maybe it's.. Hanging out with ghosts? Helping people? Yeah that should be it..
The teen were so caught up in his own thoughts that he accidentally missed the mind-blowing three-point throw of the ball. Which was made by Luke. From this moment they forced themselves to focus on the game until it finishes...
By the time the match was finished, the weather changed drastically. It became darker and much colder.. But people didn't care, since the adrenaline in their blood was still rushing. That included Eugene.
"Luke, you did so well!" - The trio already surrounded their friend, with Oliver and Joy speaking quickly and vigorously. Eugene meanwhile stood nearby, just smiling, happy for the win of his friend. Yeah their team has won. They nearly lost, but managed to save the situation.. That was amazing to be honest!
"Yeah.. Especially on the last seconds.. You had gone all in!" - Eugene praised Luke shyly, clapping quietly.
"Thank you, guys.. Phew.. I am so glad you all came here to cheer on us.." - The tall teen rubbed the back of his neck, smiling softly. - "Let's get inside and decide what to do next, shall we?" - Luke said cheerfully, gesturing for his friends to follow him... Joy and Oliver moved after him, but Eugene stayed.. It's already four p.m... And they still have to get home untill six..
"Eugene, are you coming? Or you are gonna stand her, until you turn into a piece of ice?" - Luke teased them, what made the latter let out a nervous chuckle.
"Sorry, I.. H-have to go. Got some chores to do.. And the train that I get on every day is not going to work untill tomorrow.." - Eugene began, hinting on the fact that his walk home will take a lot. And all because of that stupid train being in repair..
"Oh, no problem, bud! Just don't get yourself sick!" - He taunted, before waving his hand and leaving the teenager alone with their own thoughts..
So.. They have less than two hours to get back home.. Not too much, but still a lot.. It's autumn and the sun is setting down earlier.. So his ghost colleagues will pick him up earlier.
"Maybe use public transport..? Ah.. No.. It will still take too long.." - Mortal is now thinking about how to get home sooner, while walking out of the school's territory.
"Oh! Right! I can order a taxi!" - They suddenly exclaimed out loud, startling a few people nearby. - "Owh.. S-sorry..." - Eugene blushed in embarrassment, quickly pulling out their phone and looking for a needed option.
Lucky for them, their parent- father, sent them money every month, so Eugene have never had any problems with buying things they needed... But it still would be better if their dad would be here, not in some business trip..
Eventualy the teen ordered a car and began to wait patiently for it to arrive. It is the first time they are doing something so.. 'adult like'... And that made them feel a bit proud of themselves. Just a bit.
When the car arrived, Eugene stopped it and sat inside. After a small explaining about where they should get them to, the driver started an engine and they set off..
Eugene began to look into the window, flying in their own thoughts. Then put on their headphones, turning on some relaxing and casual music.. They felt nice.. Warm, relaxed and calm. Soon they will get home, do their homework and then meet their friends in Underworld....
Teen's train of thoughts was rudely stopped by drivers sudden and loud curse... Then the man harshy turned the steering wheel.. All Eugene saw, before the incredible pain shoot through his body, were a kid, standing on the road, horrified.. And then a hard metal post, in which they bumped.. Eugene felt like his head was hit by a hammer, while sitting there, on the back seat. He was more lucky to not get much injures.. He only has hit his head.. And apparently broke his leg, since it was squeezed between the back and driver's seats.. While the driver looked really bad, laying face down on a wheel.
"S-sir.." - They tried to check on the man, but a creaking sound made them freeze.. Slow, metalic creaking, like something was beginning to fall. They couldn't react. Just couldn't. The next second Eugene felt another wave of incredible pain, as the roof of the car was broken by the ground.. Giving his head another strong blow. The car has rolled over..
That's when everything around Eugene disappeared... No sounds.. No light.. Nothing.. He is alone in the darkness..
Why didn't he just walk back home....?
