Walking through the hallway that morning felt odd. She could hear her mother walking behind her as her footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor. Her mother bid her good morning and Lilac nodded in response.
"Is everything okay?" Her mother questioned immediately upon Lilac's lacking response. "Yeah, just tired.." Lilac replied, forcing her voice to sound more tired than it was, despite being wide awake. "It's quite early for you to be waking up.. it's 7 am you know." Her mother claimed. Lilac pauses in confusion before taking a seat on the living room couch. Her mother walks into the kitchen and begins to make breakfast.
"I was thinking about making grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch or dinner." Her mom said, trying to make small talk. Lilac's eyes lit up and she smiled a bit. "Yay!" Lilac replies. Lilacs favorite food is cheese. She loves cheese for some odd reason, nobody in that household knows where her liking for cheese came from, but it's there.
After eating breakfast, Lilac got up to do her usual routine of throwing her shoes on and getting her camera. Before she could get out the door, however, her mother stopped her. "Why do you go out so much? You're going to get sunburned, you know.... It's been really hot lately." Her mother claimed. Her daughter stared back at her. "It's a bit odd not letting your child go outside." Lilac eventually replied. Her mother laughed a bit and said, "ohh that's not what I mean." Her mother then hands her a bottle of sunscreen to put on. Lilac stares at it for a moment and then back at her mom. "You sure you wanna go out wearing that by the way." Her mother says while pointing at Lilacs purple sweater and leg warmers. Lilac nods and proceeds to exit. Her mother watches through the window as her daughter walks down the road, wondering how the child's mind truly worked.
Once more, Lilac was on her way to the flower field, constantly trying to remember her dream in the process. Not many people were outside yet, so it was a more peaceful walk. However, in the distance she spotted a familiar figure. But when trying to make out who it could be, it vanished from her sight. She shrugged it off thinking that her sleepiness finally caught up to her. Although she started to feel a bit sleepy, she continued her walk to the field.
Upon arriving, she immediately took a seat in the grass. She went to reach for her camera and realized it wasn't there. She began glancing around in confusion, she could've sworn she had grabbed it. She walked back a bit to see if she had dropped it. That's impossible though, she would've heard it fall wouldn't she? She walked back to where she was previously and just stood there. After a bit of pondering, she lowered herself and laid in the flowers.
She was enjoying the sounds of rustling leaves and the morning breeze coming over her. Her eyes eventually started to slowly close as she drifted off into slumber. Right before the moment of falling into deep sleep, she heard a voice. "You sure like those flowers, don't you girl...?" At first she ignored it, playing it off as her starting to dream. "Wake up girl. Pick one of the flowers to keep. I know you want to."
Upon hearing that she shot up and looked around. It was warmer, the sun was higher. How long had she slept in what felt like mere seconds? Upon standing, the flowers seemed to stare at her. All the hundreds of them, thousands of invisible eyes upon her. They wanted her to pick them, no.. She wanted to pick them. All of them. She wanted to so badly, she knew she shouldn't though. She knew it was wrong to pull such unique life out of its place. Eventually, after the temptation calmed itself, she turned to walk home. She looked at her side and realized her camera was right there. Annoyed at how blind she was for not noticing earlier, she grabs the camera and decides to look through it.
Something odd caught her attention, the flowers in the photos, their veins.. They seemed to be a bright neon color. She had never noticed this before, and all the close looks at the flowers from previous times didn't include this odd feature. It was new and she didn't know how to comprehend this odd phenomenon. Surely they had never been so bright before, right?
She put the camera away and began walking once more. Passing by the now bustling streets, many people. It was quite interesting to her how such a small town- that you could walk across in 20 minutes- had so many people. Always full and loud from times like 9 am all the way to almost 11 pm. It was quite overwhelming at times. Lilac hated how active it was considering the size compared to the occupants. Upon reaching her area of town, she noticed many odd looks toward her. She assumed it had something to do with her wearing a sweater and leg warmers on a warm day, so she brushed it off.
When she returned home, it was empty. She assumed her parents ran out for errands so she just went to her room and started observing the photos once again. The odd phenomenon that was the alterations stumped her. How could a photo be altered without someone touching it?{923 words}
