Jules pov
I wake up to find an absent Nick next to my bed.
We had both fallen asleep.
I tried to move but when I didn't every single part of my body hurt.
Even with my advanced healing, my body was still destroyed.
I sigh and look up at my roof. I wanted to go out and do something. I turn to look at my closet and see that my suit is in there. I barely remember taking it off.
I reach over to my drawer and pull out my Tylenol and Ibuprofen. I take one of each and swallow them. Hoping that the effects will kick in soon and I'll be able to get into action.
I wasn't feeling my best but I didn't care because I needed something to do. I heard sirens and I knew it was go time. I jump out of bed and change into my suit.
I lock my door and climb out the fire escape.
I follow the sirens until I reach a burning apartment complex. I gasp when I realize it's Nick's apartments.
There are people crying outside and yelling and the firemen assure them they're trying their best to search the building for people and suddenly I see Nicks mom. She's yelling at a firemen and pointing up at the building. I know exactly what she's saying."No, no, please, no" I whisper to myself. I scope out the place and find an open window on the third floor. I use the tree next to it to jump into the building. Immediately, Im hit with an immense heat. I pull my hoodie up and try to breathe inside my suit. I'm dripping sweat, I can feel my suit sticking to my skin, smoke is burning my eyes, I can feel it in my lungs as I start coughing.
"Nick!" I yell. I pray he's not here.
There are flames everywhere. I hear cracking within the walls and I know the building is going to cave in soon.
I listen closely to see if anyone is still in here. Most specifically Nick.
"Nick!" I yell in between coughs. I'm wheezing for air now.
I make my way into his apartment.
The door is open and flames are everywhere. His couch is burnt to a crisp.
"NICK!" I scream. My voice breaks.
I hear coughing from a different room and I run towards it. I burn myself but I ignore it and continue towards Nick.
I turn to a hallway and I see him sprawled on the floor, wheezing. His roof had caved in and fallen on him. He was trapped.
I run over to him and focus all my leftover energy into moving the roof off of him. Once I had succeeded I wrap my arm under him and he leans on me for walking support. I lead him out the door when the cracking becomes more intense. Louder.
I take it as my cue to hurry the fuck up and get Nick out of here. We were outside the window I came in from when I hear a baby's cry. My heart drops. I focus on the cry and I know that it is a baby. There's more cracking and I know I can't leave it here. I help Nick onto the tree branch and I run back inside. I feel coldness in my back and I realize the firefighters have started putting the fire out. Water cools me down as i make my way toward the crying baby.
I reach an open apartment where it's open but a bookshelf blocked the entrance.
I push it away with my mind and I enter. The apartment was filled with smoke but not as much fire thankfully.
There's a passed out woman holding her baby in her arms. I check the woman's pulse. It's weak but it's there. I take the baby in my arms and cover her with a blanket she had on the couch. I try and shake the woman awake. I don't what I'll do if she doesn't wake up.
The woman begins to stir and she freaks out when she doesn't feel her baby anymore.
"Ma'am. Your baby is ok. I have her but I need you to work with me to get you and her out of this building."
She coughs and nods.
I hold on to her and I exit the apartment. I was close to passing out but I needed one last ounce of everything left.
I take in a deep breath and gather all the energy I have left. I clench my fists and focus. I release them and a rapid gush of wind turns the fire off. It's not permanent but it's enough to get the mother and baby out of the building. I walk them all the way down and they exit successfully. I lose my focus once they're out of the building and the flames return.
The cracking intensifies until I look up and see the roof caving in on me. I take one step toward the exit but I collapse in exhaustion. All I can do is stare up at the roof as it begins to break. I cough and I taste blood until everything goes black.
