The days have gradually been getting hotter. Our Ascalon Empire is heading into summer.
I stuck a big parasol into the garden and enjoyed some tea time in its shade.
“It’s hot, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it’s hot.”
Today, I’m with the magic teacher. Having lunch together after class makes it more enjoyable than being alone.
I had a sandwich, apple pie, and some proper vegetables, so for the final dessert time, the chef made me a special dessert!
When he brought out the limited-edition summer sherbet, I couldn't help but shout.
The sherbet was delicious! It was apple-flavored, had fruit pieces in it, and was both crunchy and chewy.
“Young Master, excuse me for your face.”
“Mm.”
Kitty came over, and when I turned my face slightly, she quickly wiped the sweat that had dripped down from my forehead. She stepped back, and I continued eating the sherbet.
Delicious! Knowing it’s something I can only have in the summer makes it even more delicious!
“It’s so nice to have something cold in your mouth, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it feels nice.”
“Right!”
I exchanged glances with my teacher and smiled. My teacher couldn’t quite smile, but the corners of his mouth turned up slightly. But it was still a smile!
“Do you like sherbets, Teacher?”
“…Yes, I do.”
“That’s great! I like it too!”
Apparently, the teacher doesn’t have any particular food dislikes. He eats both sweet and bitter things with a straight face, which is kind of mysterious.
So, I often end up asking during lunch. He always thinks carefully before answering. It seems he likes sherbet.
“Since it’s a seasonal limited item, you can only eat it in summer. It’s a rare experience!”
“I see. …I’ll make it a summer memory.”
After looking carefully at the glass bowl with sherbet and then at me, the teacher smiled again.
“Aren’t you going to escape the heat, Teacher?”
“Escape the heat?”
“Next week, I’m going with my Brother Sevran to a summer retreat. Stefan might come too!”
“Ah, a summer retreat. I have no plans to leave the capital, so I’ll be doing as usual.”
“Is that so… Is it for work?”
“Yes.”
Father also said he’s busy this year. Poor thing, no summer vacation. I’ll bring him back a souvenir.
“I’ll bring you a souvenir too, Teacher!”
“A souvenir…?”
“Huh? You don’t know what a souvenir is?”
“…I understand that it’s a kind of gift. It’s something you take to a place you’re visiting, right? I’ve read about it in etiquette books and ancient texts.”
Hmm? Is that right? I don’t know what "gift" means, but is it okay if the place you’re visiting is a friend’s house?
“Hmm… probably.”
“I see.”
The teacher looked somewhat relieved. He took a bite of sherbet and sipped his tea. Hmm, quite a refined way of drinking!
“I don’t know where your house is, so I’ll give it to you when I get back from the retreat.”
“All right.”
What should I get? I don’t know what the teacher likes, so should I just pick something I like?
I usually catch bugs and collect cicada shells during the summer, so if I find a cool one, I’ll give it to him!
Even though I collect them every year, by the time autumn comes, the big cicada shells are gone from my room. They’re so big, but where do they go?
I started thinking about this summer mystery when I noticed the teacher had stopped moving. I thought maybe he was tired of the sherbet, but he looked kind of sad.
“Teacher?”
“Ah… Sorry. When I thought about not being able to see you, Fran, for a while, I felt like there was a hole in my heart.”
“! Ugh, now that you say that, I’m starting to feel sad too.”
“Sad? …I see.”
He made a face like he finally understood. The teacher can be a bit slow sometimes.
I’ll be away for about three weeks.
“Teacher, don’t forget about me while I’m gone, okay?”
The teacher is always busy with research, so I’m worried he might forget about me if we don’t meet for a while.
As I started thinking that, my hand stopped eating the sherbet too.
“Fran.”
“Yes?”
“No one leaves as strong an impression as you.”
That’s a compliment, right?
“By the time you return, I’ll have found a souvenir for you here in the capital.”
“Oh! That means you’ll be thinking about me a lot, so you won’t forget!”
“Yes.”
“I’ll think about you too! I’ll find something cool for you!”
“Yes.”
“Haha! Let’s have a souvenir exchange party!”
“Yes. …Haha.”
The teacher smiled properly this time, and I smiled back! We looked at the spoons we were holding and decided to eat the sherbet together. Delicious!
All right, I’m going to catch a big bug for the teacher!
