ORION

Monday, August 19, 2024. 7:37 AM

When Dad (yes, I've come to terms with simply calling him Dad now) drops me off at the front of the school, I'm already running late. The bell rings at 7:40, so I've got three minutes to get my schedule and find my first class. So, basically, I'm fucked.

I enter the front doors, seeing only two kids in the lobby. One of them is on her phone, holding a stack of fliers loosely. She looks familiar... The other one looks up from his own phone. He looks familiar too...

He stands up straight from where he was leaning back against the wall and steps up to me, holding out a flier. "Hi, all freshmen go to the cafeteria." He says and then points in the direction of said cafeteria.

"Uh... I'm a Senior."

"Oh, shit—my bad man." I've gotten used to being called man and that sort of thing over the years, but it's nice to know I'm passing here and now. "You're new I'm assuming?"

The girl looks up from her phone, glancing between us. She has long black hair, wearing black combat boots, fishnets, a black skirt, a red and black striped sweater, and she has a lot of accessories. I still can't quite put my finger on where I know her from though...

"Yeah, I was told to go to the office for my schedule..." I explain.

I'm feeling quite tense. That might be due to the fact that this guy is probably 6 feet tall and pretty muscular. Also, good-looking. He has tan skin and dark brown curls. Defined cheekbones and I catch a glimpse of dimples when he speaks. Amber eyes. He's wearing a black t-shirt with a hunter-green overshirt. He has green converse shoes and blue jeans. A single gold chain hangs from his neck with a heart and an infinity sign going through it.

"I can take you and help you find your classes if you want?" He suggests. And, yes please.

"Uh, okay." I give him a slight smile. WHY AM I SO WEIRD?

"Ronnie, you good here?" He asks the girl, Ronnie. The name makes it even more familiar, but I still can't seem to figure out what it is... It's killing me.

"Yeah. I don't think anyone else is coming, bell's about to ring anyway." She replies. I really hope I won't get in trouble for being late to class—because I definitely won't be on time.

"Alright. Follow me, new kid." I really hate that he calls me new kid, but I'll tolerate it.

I follow him into the office where the secretary greets him by name, "Ah, Mr. Mitchell... You're doing better, I hope?"

He seems to visibly tense, but he responds "Yup..!"

The secretary prints out my schedule. Thankfully, they have my name as Orion Graves in the system, so there wasn't an awkward "try Samantha?".

My new-found tour guide—whose name I'm still waiting to learn—takes my schedule, looking it over. "Oh, shoot, we have all the same classes!"

"Really..?" Three of my four classes this semester are AP... Please tell me this guy isn't also some genius... I can't have someone better than me. Not now... And I know that is an absolutely awful thing to say! But I need things to be like normal. Even if I'm in a completely different town across the country, I still need things to be how they were back home...
