Today was the day I would visit Princess Constance at her castle, and my nerves fluttered like trapped birds in my chest. The grand halls of the castle were beautiful, yet intimidating. The very air felt heavy with the history and power of the royal family, making me feel small, even though I knew this meeting had a purpose. I'd thought over this moment countless times since the ball—how I would approach her, the words I would say, and the way I could offer her comfort.
I wanted to be the princess's friend, to ease the burdens I knew she'd face in the next two years. I remembered them all too well from the novel. If I could make even the smallest difference in her life, I had to try. After all, the male lead would eventually come to protect her, but until then, she was vulnerable, and I couldn't stand by knowing what awaited her. I would help in any way I could, even if it only made a little of her struggle easier.
As I waited in the lavish sitting room, I smoothed the fabric of my dress, trying to calm my racing heart. My reflection on the polished marble floor showed a composed girl, but inside, I felt anything but. My mind kept racing through scenarios of how I'd start this conversation. I just wanted to help her—how could I make her believe that?
Finally, Princess Constance entered, her long green hair flowing behind her like a gentle wave. She wore a smile, one that eased my nerves slightly, but there was still an air of caution around her.
"Lady Maze," she greeted, her voice as soft and delicate as she appeared, "thank you for coming. I hope the journey wasn't too tiresome."
I rose to greet her, curtsying deeply.
"It's an honor to be here, Your Highness. Thank you for inviting me."
She gestured for me to sit, and after we exchanged pleasantries, her eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"I must say, I've been eager to speak with you ever since the ball. Your gown—it was unlike anything I've ever seen. It caught everyone's attention, including mine. It seemed so comfortable, yet regal. Was it truly as comfortable as it appeared?"
A sense of relief washed over me because of her friendly tone and curiosity about the gown I wore during the ball.
"It was, Your Highness. The design is more modern, yet it holds all the elegance befitting an event like the ball. I worked closely with the dressmaker to ensure it would allow me to move freely while still looking the part. I'm so glad you liked it."
Princess Constance's smile widened, and there was a glint of admiration in her eyes.
"I've never worn something that looked so effortless and elegant. I would love to have my own gown like that. Do you think it would be possible?"
