Mayumi was busy packing the last of her things into her duffel bag, her movements quick and purposeful. The room was almost empty now, save for a few items left behind in haste. She had been dreading this moment, the departure back to the headquarters, but duty called, and there was no escaping it.

She was about to leave for the mission, and Jack was coming along. They were on the same team this time, and the thought of spending that much time together-especially on a dangerous mission-was weighing heavily on her mind.

Jack lounged casually by the doorframe, arms crossed, watching her in that all-too-familiar way. His smile was teasing, but there was something else in his eyes-something that resembled concern, though he wouldn't admit it.

"You sure you've got everything packed?" Jack asked, a grin spreading across his face. "Because I wouldn't mind taking your stuff off your hands if you need help."

Mayumi rolled her eyes without sparing him a glance. "I've got it," she replied. "Unlike you, I don't need help with packing."

Jack chuckled, stepping inside and leaning against the wall. "You're always so... independent. It's annoying, you know? You don't even let me mess things up for you, which, let's face it, I do best."

She glanced up at him, her lips curling into a small smile. "That's because I know you too well."

Jack's smirk deepened. "Ah, so you admit it. You *do* know I'm better at things than you give me credit for."

She shook her head, a playful glint dancing in her eyes. "Yeah, sure, you're great at getting into trouble and causing chaos. I'll give you that."

He laughed softly. "Ah, you love it."

Mayumi zipped her bag shut, standing up and glancing around the room one last time. "I don't know about 'love,' Jack. But you're definitely a handful."

Jack pushed off the wall and walked closer, his usual swagger still in place, but his gaze was softer. "And you wouldn't have it any other way."

Mayumi didn't respond immediately. Instead, she picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder, but she didn't move to the door. "This mission isn't going to be easy, Jack," she said, her tone quieter now. "We're in this together, but that doesn't make it less dangerous."

He followed her closely, his demeanor still playful, but now there was a hint of seriousness. "Yeah, I know," he said, his voice dropping a little. "But if there's one thing I'm good at, it's having your back. You know that."

Mayumi stopped by the door, turning to face him. Her expression softened, but she kept her eyes focused on him with that familiar guardedness. "You better, Jack. Because I'm not going to be the one to save your ass this time."

Jack stepped closer, their faces inches apart now. His voice was quiet, almost serious for once. "You don't have to. I've got you, Mayumi. I don't plan on letting anything happen to you."

She raised an eyebrow, not quite believing him, but there was something in her that softened. She could feel the tension in her chest ease ever so slightly, knowing that he was there. He always was, even when he was the last person she wanted to depend on.

"Why do you always have to be so... so *you*?" she asked, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

Jack grinned, his usual cocky self returning. "You wouldn't want me any other way."
