By October, Mayumi had grown quiet. She didn't argue much anymore, and Jack couldn't help but feel a gnawing tension because of it. The lively spark that once defined their conversations had faded, and it irritated him. He was used to her fiery spirit, the way she'd challenge him, but now, the silence was unbearable. By December, Mayumi had fallen severely ill. Jack wanted to help her, to be there for her, but the weight of the past held him back. He wasn't sure if his presence would comfort her or just remind her of everything that had happened between them. Still, he kept a close eye on her from afar, knowing Rimmy was always there by her side.
Mayumi never considered herself weak, though. Even through her illness, she tried to keep her strength, refusing to be coddled. As the months passed, January arrived, bringing with it cooler winds and a sense of change. One fine day, Jack was live again, teasing Mayumi as he always did, poking fun without a second thought. He didn't realize this time she was feeling more emotional, and his words struck deeper than usual.
Suddenly, Mayumi snapped. "Stop!" she cried, her voice breaking. "Stop being there for me! I can't handle this anymore. I can't believe you're not made for me. Just... stop."
Tears streamed down her face as she turned and ran to her room, leaving Jack standing there, stunned. He hadn't expected that reaction. He retreated to his own room, feeling upset, his mind racing. How had things gotten to this point?
Rimmy, always the peacemaker, decided enough was enough. She went to both of them, one by one, urging them to reconcile. She worked her charm, persuading them to meet that night by the lake. Jack, hesitant but hopeful, agreed. And so did Mayumi.
That evening, under the soft glow of moonlight reflecting on the water, they stood by the lake, the chill in the air making them huddle close. Jack looked at her, the weight of everything between them hanging in the silence. Finally, he spoke, his voice soft but sincere.
"Mayumi... I love you. I always have."
Mayumi didn't say anything at first, but then she took out a band and gently tied it around his wrist. She looked into his eyes and said, "Promise me you'll never fight like that again. No more brutality. Be the boy of my standards, Jack. And never... make me cry again."
Jack looked down at the band, then back at her. "I promise," he said, his voice steady. "I'll be better."
They leaned in, and as their lips met in a soft kiss, the world around them seemed to fade away. The night was cold, but the warmth between them was undeniable. Just as they were lost in the moment, Rimmy appeared, wrapped in a thick blanket. She playfully rolled her eyes at the sight of them.
"Alright, lovebirds," she teased, tugging the blanket around both of them. "We need to head back before Kevin wakes up and causes another scene. Let's go."
They laughed, the tension finally lifting as they climbed into the car. Wrapped in warmth, both literal and emotional, they drove back home, their bond stronger than it had been in months.
