For Kira Veronica Bennet, racing against her boyfriend in a Cessna 172 at sun rise was nothing out of the ordinary. "Damn, Keeks." Nick said through the intercom. "We're approaching the landing pad, preparing for decent, and, Nick, please don't pop a wheelie."

"No, promises." He floored it down to the run way. She could practically hear the grin in his voice, and she couldn't help smiling too.

Once she reached the landing pad and hopped out of the plane she'd been flying far before the legal age, Nick grabbed her from behind and pulled up her left sleeve.

"Nick!" Kira yelled, as he held up her newly tattooed wrist.

"Why, Keeks?" He whispered, letting her wrist drop.

"Why what? It's my eighteenth birthday today, Nick, it's legal." She muttered, turning back to her aircraft, fiddling with the wing.

"One tattoo is fine, but..." he took her hands in his. "Just, don't go off the rails tonight, Kira. Remember your teaching permit."

"The love birds enjoying themselves?" Kira's mother, Laney Bennet, who had had Kira at sixteen, ran away from home, and gotten her flying license to support her family. She'd dated guys, but all of them eventually left.

Maybe that was why Kira was still so uneasy with Nick, she didn't know what that kind of love was.

Kira smiled. "Going for a birthday fly."

Her mother walked over and put her hands on Kira's shoulders. "You did it, with a boyfriend, you have a steady job ahead of you, and you're not pregnant."

Kira rolled her eyes. "Glad you're happy, mom."

Laney let go of Kira's shoulders and smiled. "Stop fussing around and go get ready, I'll be in your room later to give you your present. And you," she said, fixing the boy her daughter loved with a look, "go get ready, you need to look handsome for my baby." Nick grinned, "oh it, Ms. B."
