Chapter 15

The cabin felt like a refuge and a prison all at once. Ava sat in silence, her heart racing as she and Ethan stayed hidden, the reality of their situation pressing down on her. The world outside felt miles away, but the danger lurked just beyond the door, keeping her on edge.

Ethan glanced around the dimly lit room, assessing their surroundings. "We need to barricade the door and find a way to secure the windows," he said, his voice steady, though Ava could see the tension in his posture.

"What if they find us?" she whispered, trying to keep her voice low. The thought of their pursuers sent shivers down her spine.

"They won't. I'll make sure of it," he promised, moving to a stack of old wood in the corner of the cabin. He began piling it against the door, his movements quick and purposeful.

Ava watched him work, her heart swelling with admiration. He was determined to protect her, and it was both comforting and terrifying. She could feel the weight of their situation heavy on her shoulders, and the fear that lingered was starting to give way to frustration.

"Ethan," she finally spoke up, her voice breaking the tense silence. "I need you to tell me everything. I can't just sit here in the dark and wonder what's happening."

He paused, looking back at her, uncertainty flickering in his eyes. "Ava, I—"

"No more secrets," she interrupted, her tone firm. "If we're going to get through this, we need to trust each other completely. I can't fight this battle blindfolded."

Ethan sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Okay. But it's not easy to talk about."

Ava nodded, her heart pounding as she prepared herself for the truth. "I can handle it. Just tell me."

He took a deep breath, leaning against the wall. "The people after you... They're part of a much larger organization. It's dangerous, and I didn't want to drag you into it. I thought I could keep you safe without involving you in all this."

Ava felt her stomach drop. "What kind of organization? What do they want with me?"

"They're involved in illegal activities—money laundering, trafficking. I don't know all the details, but David got too close to something he shouldn't have, and they're after him. You got pulled into this because of your connection to him," Ethan explained, his voice low and tense.

Ava's mind raced as she processed his words. "So they think I have information? Or they just want to make sure David doesn't talk?"

"Both," Ethan replied. "I think they want to eliminate any threats. That includes you."

Tears filled Ava's eyes as the gravity of the situation sunk in. "I never wanted any of this. I just wanted to help my brother."

"I know, and I'm so sorry," Ethan said, his voice filled with regret. "I wish I could have protected you from this."

Ava wiped away a tear, anger bubbling within her. "You should have told me sooner. I could have helped you come up with a plan instead of hiding out here."

"I didn't want to involve you in my mess," he replied, frustration evident in his voice. "I thought I could shield you from it all. But I see now that I was wrong."

Ava stood, the weight of his words heavy in the air. "We need to be a team if we're going to get through this," she said firmly. "No more secrets, no more running away. We face this together."

Ethan nodded, his expression softening as he looked at her. "You're right. I'm sorry. I'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe, but I can't promise there won't be risks."
