Breaking Free

Chapter 4

The plane ride back was excruciating. I had barely slept or been able to eat since my injury. I was in so much pain.

As soon as the plane landed, Joe dropped Josh and I off at the hospital so I could get a permanent cast, and hopefully some pain relief.

Having X-rays done was brutal, but thankfully it wasn't going to require surgery to fix. I had to bite down on my lip as they put the cast on.

"You're doing so good babe," Josh says as I squeeze his hand.

"All done, let me get your medicine and you can leave," the nurse says

As soon as I get the prescription, I try to open the bottle. Josh sees me struggling and helps me open it. He hands me a pill and I quickly swallow it.

"Let's go meet my brothers and cousin. I'm sure Evie's probably missing her mommy" he says

We walked down the street to the restaurant that they were eating at. As soon as we walked inside, I noticed that Evie and Joe weren't at the table.

"Feeling better?" Jon asks

"I will be as soon as my medicine kicks in. Where's Evie?"

"Joe took her to the bathroom a few minutes ago. They should be back soon,"

"Thank you guys for watching her. Hopefully she behaved,"

"Well minus a little meltdown when you and Josh left she was perfect," Sefa says

"Look Mommy's back," I hear Joe says from behind us. I hear little feet running toward me. Evie runs into my arms and gives me the biggest hug.

"I missed you," she says

"I missed you too princess. Were you good for your uncles?"

She nods, "I've been good,"

"Where's my hug?" Josh asks

She turns around and jumps into his arms hugging him tightly.

"Look Evie our dinner is here," Joe says

She runs over to her spot next to him and climbs into her chair. The medicine finally started to kick in and for the first time in over 24 hours I felt like eating.

I carefully try to cut my burger in half, but it was hard with one hand. "Need help babe?" Josh asks

"I got it,"

"Now I see where Evie gets her stubbornness from," Joe says

"I could have told you that,"

Josh takes the knife from me and cuts my burger in half "I don't want another trip to the hospital today," he says

"Mommy was at the hospital?" Evie asks sounding sad.

"Just to get her arm fixed, she's fine now princess," Joe says

"See mommy got a cast on her arm to make it heal," I say, holding up my purple cast,"

"Does it hurt?" She asks

"Not any more. They gave me some medicine to help me feel better,"

"It's finally kicking in?" Jon asks

"I wouldn't be able to eat if it wasn't. The thought of food made me nauseous when I was in pain,"

"Hopefully you can sleep tonight," Josh says

"I've been awake for over 36 hours at this point. I was hurting so bad last night I couldn't sleep,"

"Maybe if you weren't stubborn and listened to us," Joe says
