Inez's heart raced as she rushed into the dining room, her movements quick and desperate as she tried to signal her friends to leave—fast.
But their attempt to escape hit a wall—literally—when they found the front door locked tight.
Grover, eyes wide with urgency, hastily slipped on Luke's shoes, and they darted around the house until they came across a cellar door. Without hesitation, they descended into the darkness below, their hearts pounding.
The room they entered was cold, the chill seeping into their bones. Darkness blanketed everything. Inez pulled her jacket closer around her, seeking comfort in the small warmth it offered. Her friends huddled around her, the weight of the silence pressing down on them, broken only by her labored breaths and the erratic pounding of her heart.
The door above creaked, and a surge of panic swelled in Inez's chest. Her mind raced with fear as she squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block it all out.
"I'm here," Percy's soft voice whispered beside her. His presence cut through the overwhelming terror like a lifeline.
Suddenly, a dim light flickered in the room, casting eerie shadows along the walls. Inez's breath hitched as she noticed the statues—each one frozen in a twisted expression of torment.
A startled shout from Percy shattered the tension, and Inez let out a short scream before his hand clamped over her mouth to silence it. Their situation became chillingly clear: they were in Medusa's lair, surrounded by her petrified victims.
The cellar door slammed shut behind them, sealing their fate and heightening their sense of isolation. They were trapped—at the mercy of a vengeful gorgon.
"Come on," Annabeth's voice whispered urgently through the darkness, breaking the stillness. She gestured for them to follow her deeper into the room.
Grover glanced around, his eyes darting between Percy and Annabeth, weighing their options. "There's three of us, and only one of her. If we split up, she can't keep her eyes on all of us at once," he said, urgency lacing his voice.
Percy nodded, his mind racing to form a plan. "I'll get in the air, draw her attention. As soon as you hear me say 'Maia,' you guys start—"
But before Percy could finish, Grover was yanked into the air, his panicked scream filling the room as he flailed helplessly. "Off! Down!" he yelled as he flew all over the place.
Annabeth watched in disbelief. "So, we're gonna need a new plan."
"No shit, Sherlock," Inez muttered, catching her breath.
Before they could regroup, a voice—low and chilling—cut through the air. "We are not our parents, until we choose to be," Medusa's words rang with cold malice. "You three have chosen."
