The morning sun filtered through the blinds as Clara quietly packed the last of her belongings into a suitcase. She moved swiftly, methodically, not letting her emotions cloud her judgment. She needed to get out, and she needed to do it now. Her old apartment, the place where she had laughed, cried, and made countless memories with Max, had become a cage of pain. Staying here would only prolong the heartbreak. Every corner held echoes of moments she no longer wanted to remember.
Her phone buzzed for what felt like the hundredth time that morning. Clara ignored it, as she had been doing since the night before. She knew who it was—Max, her sister Emily, maybe even her mother. But she couldn't deal with them right now. Not today.
It was still early, the city was just waking up, but she was already packed and ready to go. She had made the decision to transfer to a new apartment closer to the Harrington Empire's main office, and she wasn't going to delay any longer. She needed distance—both physically and emotionally—from everything that tied her to her past. From Max. From Emily. From the life she had been trying to build around them, one that had now crumbled to pieces.
The phone buzzed again. This time, Clara hesitated, glancing at the screen. It wasn't Max. It was her mother. With a heavy sigh, she unlocked her phone and read the message.
"Your sister's been crying all night. She says you can't accept her love for Max. Clara, they didn't mean to hurt you. Please understand, and don't make this harder for everyone. Emily is devastated."
Clara's chest tightened as she read the words. Even now, it seemed she was the one being blamed. It didn't matter how she felt, didn't matter how much it hurt that the two people she trusted most had been lying to her for years. It was always about Emily. Emily, the golden child, the one who could do no wrong. And Clara was always the one who was supposed to understand, to be the bigger person, to step aside
For a brief moment, tears welled in her eyes, but she blinked them away, refusing to let them fall. No more tears, she reminded herself. She had made that promise to herself last night, and she intended to keep it.
With a deep breath, she sent one final glance around the apartment. The now-bare walls and empty shelves gave it a hollow feel, but it was better this way. She wouldn't have to see the photos of her and Max anymore, wouldn't have to be reminded of the laughter they once shared or the nights spent dreaming about the future. All of it was gone now, and it was time to let go.
Clara grabbed her bags, her movements precise and determined. She wasn't running away. She was choosing a new path. And part of that meant moving forward without the weight of her past dragging her down.
She stepped out of the apartment, locking the door behind her for the last time. The cool morning air hit her face as she made her way to the car, loading her belongings into the trunk. For a moment, she stood still, taking in her surroundings. She could hear the distant sound of traffic, the hum of the city coming to life. It was a new day, and she was ready to embrace it.
Her new apartment was located downtown, only a few blocks from the Harrington Empire State's main building. The prestigious company towered over the city like a beacon of power, and soon she would be part of it. This was the fresh start she needed—a new place, a new job, and no one to tie her down or hold her back.
As she climbed into the driver's seat, Clara glanced at her phone one last time. There were more missed calls and messages from both Max and Emily. But she couldn't face them right now. Maybe one day she would be able to look them in the eye again, but today wasn't that day.
