Later in the evening, Dr. Benjamin came to check on Mercy in her ward. Beforehand, he instructed the nurses to move the other patients to the next ward, leaving Mercy as the only occupant. When he entered that evening, Mercy was fast asleep. In her dream, a soldier urged her to leave the hospital immediately. Upon waking, she found Dr. Benjamin touching her legs in a way that made her uncomfortable.
"Dr. Benjamin?" she said, her voice thick with confusion.
"Oh, you're awake! Thank goodness I came at the right time," he replied quickly, removing his hand from her legs.
"Thank God," Mercy said softly.
"I feel so much better than yesterday," she added as she stretched her arms.
"You know, I always want you to feel okay, especially now that your mum has departed. I should be responsible for your welfare," Dr. Benjamin replied, his tone sincere.
"How do you mean, sir?" Mercy asked, her curiosity piqued."That's a good question. I want you to always be beside me to light up my world with your smile. You are a very beautiful girl, and I would do anything for you," he said in a low voice.
"How do you mean? What do you want, sir?" Mercy pressed further."Isn't that a rhetorical question? I want you to be my girl," he responded, his gaze intense."What! Have you considered my age?" Mercy asked boldly.
"Age is just a number. Don't say anything else. I know you're confused right now, but I will give you enough time to think about what I just told you. By tomorrow, my answer should be ready. For now, I've got a surgery to perform," Dr. Benjamin said, his demeanor shifting back to professional.
Before Mercy could say anything else, he left her ward. About thirty minutes later, the dream she had experienced earlier replayed in her mind, echoing the command: "Leave this hospital immediately."Gathering her courage, Mercy climbed out of bed. Just as she was about to leave, she heard the footsteps of another doctor approaching, prompting her to duck back under the covers. When the doctor entered her ward, she told him that Dr. Benjamin had confirmed she was healthy enough to leave the hospital.
"What about the hospital card that confirms your discharge?" Dr. Balogun asked."They're all with Dr. Benjamin. He also paid my hospital bill," Mercy replied."That's very kind of him. Have you eaten anything?" Dr. Balogun inquired. He wanted to fetch Mercy something to eat.
"No, sir, don't trouble yourself. I can get something on my way home. Please, sir, thank Dr. Benjamin for me. He is a very good man, and may God bless him," Mercy smiled as she walked toward the door."I will pass your message to him once the surgery is over," Dr. Balogun assured her as she stepped out.
However, as soon as she left the hospital, fear gripped her. She felt as if someone were following her, but when she looked back, there was no one in sight. After a long walk, she managed to reach the police station.
