It was Monday morning, and it was hot. I made breakfast for everyone, and we all sat around the kitchen table eating and not talking.  Once breakfast was over, I washed the dishes, cleaned the floor, went back upstairs, dressed, and left with Father to the barbershop.  Father parked his car outside the barbershop we walked in I closed the door behind me, and I sat in the barber chair this time, my hair was cut really short "Now young man, that is a proper 1920 boy short back and sides" Father said smiling at me.

We left the barbershop "Phillip, I dropped you off at the park for the festival; how long would you be?" Father asked "The whole day" I replied "That's out of the question Phillip! Only for a few hours mind you," said Father "Why? Father" I replied putting my hands in the pockets of my shorts "Your Mother said so young man" Before Father said another word, his phone started ringing.

"Phillip, that was your Mother we have to go back and pick her up.  She is going with you to the festival" "But!... I am old enough to go on my own, Father" I replied "Come along, young man do as you're told" Father said putting his hands on my shoulders "But..." came my reply.  We picked up Mother and headed to the festival "Elizabeth, phone me when you both need to be picked up" "I will John" Mother replied.  We walked into the park and every part of it was packed with things to do "Mother look, they have tables where you can get your face painted, like tigers, lions" I said with a smile "So young man, you think your Mother needs her face painted" did I say the wrong thing? Or did I, um.

"No, Mother! I am only pointing it out," I said. "Ok, Mother, let's have some fun," I replied.  At the festival, paramedics and a doctor were on standby, and police made their appearances. They had everything for adults and kids, and I was at the archery with Mother joining me. "Phillip, it's time for lunch once we are done here. Are you catching up?" Mother said smiling "You are your own" I replied.

Mother and I sat at a picnic table having lunch "Mother can I go on my own, around the festival" I asked her "No young man" Mother replied looking at me "Why?" "Because I say so, Phillip don't ask me again young man," Mother said putting her cup of tea down on the table.  When we were done eating we walked away from the table and continued having fun.

We came across an ice cream van with kids all lined up, I checked my pockets and took out money "Kids the ice creams are on me" I called out, "YEAH" They all called out.  Mother called Father to pick us up "Mother, I am going to spend the rest of the day, doing my own thing," I said with a smile on my face, she looked at me "Come along young man, your Father is on his way to pick us up" Mother replied "But! Mother..." "Phillip! I will not hear such rubbish coming from your mouth, do you hear me, young man" Mother said with a tone in her voice then she nipped me on the soft part of my bum.

Father picked us up and drove home. "Phillip! Get up those stairs and go to your bedroom," Mother said, pointing. As I was waiting on Mother, my back was turned, and then it went dark. Twenty minutes later, I woke up, looked down, and I was wearing a dress—a yellow summer frilly one at that—white ankle socks and black Mary Jane shoes. I moved a bit, and it felt like I was wearing frilly cotton nickers with what felt like a white cotton petticoat.

I sat on my bed and looked around and saw that I had a ribbon with my dress, the door to my bedroom opened Mother walked in "This is what happens when you talk back to your Mother Hannah Gardener!" Mother said walking towards me "That's not my name" I replied, Mother slapped my face "Yes it is Hannah, when I call you by your name you reply by saying YES MOTHER, do you understand little girl".  No response from me then Mother slapped the other side of my face hard "Understand me, little girl, what is your name?" she grabbed my right ear and lifted it, I let a small scream "This will get painful little girl if you don't answer your Mother" said Mother with a smile.

For fun "It's Hannah Gardener Mother" I replied.  For the rest of the day, I was treated as a girl by my parents, when Brian came home he saw me and Mother told him, to call me Hannah.  Mother told Brian what happened at the park "I thought Phillip, was going to the park for the summer festival by himself, why did you go with Phillip Mother" Brian asked "Phillip or should I say, Hannah, needed parental supervision, Brian.  Hannah is your younger sister for today and you will treat her as such, do you understand me" Mother replied, Brian looked at Mother with a puzzled look "BRIAN!" Mother screamed "Yes, stop screaming at me," Brian said.

Brian walked into the front room and saw Father sitting on the sofa not reacting to what has Mother done to Phillip "Father why didn't you stop Mother? Look at Phillip" Brian said sitting down on the chair near the sofa "You mean Hannah Brian, your sister" Father replied "You are supporting Mother in what she is doing to Phillip" "Yes I am Brian show should you, Hannah is your sister for the rest of today and you will treat her as such" replied Father.

I opened the door to the front room and walked in with a tray with two mugs of tea on it in my hands "Your teas" I said "Thank you, Hannah," Father said "Brian" he took his mug off the tray "Thank you, Phillip" Brian replied.  The rest of the day dragged on, Mother had me walk up and down the hallway with a book on my head, how to sit down with the book on my head, and walk down the stairs like a girl, Mother taught me etiquette at the table.

I was in my bedroom when Brian walked in "Hello Brian" I said with a smile before Brian said a word to me, Mother walked in "Brian did you knock on your sister's Bedroom door, and asked if she was decent." Mother asked him while fixing the ribbon at the back of my dress "No I did not Mother" replied Brian "Next time, do so now leave".
