It had been raining for weeks now, and to Wren's relief, no one seemed to realize she was the cause. Except for Simon and Jack, of course—they'd been with her when she first discovered her Weather Changer powers in the Council Chamber years ago. But beyond them, everyone chalked the endless rain up to Manitoba's famously unpredictable weather. Ever since her argument with Jesse, the downpour hadn't let up, which puzzled her. She felt fine, or at least that's what she kept telling herself. Sure, there were moments of stress, like when they found Jack bleeding out and Simon had to calm her down, but she'd been feeling better since then. Especially with Jack and Jesse finally getting over themselves, everything seemed to be on the up and up.
Today was no different from any other day lately. The only real change was that she'd gone out for groceries and returned to the house, with Jennifer tagging along, eager for an excuse to escape the house. Much to Wren's surprise, Jennifer didn't pull any wild stunts or torment anyone like usual. Instead, she spent the entire trip talking—mostly about boys. Wren didn't mind listening, but after a while, the endless chatter started to wear on her. As they unpacked groceries in the kitchen, she found herself wishing Jennifer would just go cause trouble somewhere else.
"I don't know, but he was definitely the hottest guy in class," Jennifer rambled, sitting on the counter.
Wren hummed absently, barely processing the conversation. She couldn't care less. Right now, she just wanted to finish putting the groceries away and lie down. Jennifer's voice had become little more than background noise. As she stared at the pantry, trying to figure out where to put the cans of SpaghettiOs, she half-heard Jennifer say something.
"—don't you think?"
"Yeah, sure," Wren said automatically, not paying attention. Big mistake.
"I KNEW IT!" Jennifer shrieked.
Wren jumped, spinning around to see Jennifer grinning like she'd just hit the jackpot, phone camera pointed straight at her. That look on Jennifer's face was never a good sign.
"...You knew what?" Wren asked carefully. Whatever Jennifer was up to, it couldn't be good. She could feel the tension in her chest, and the rain outside seemed to beat harder against the windows.
Jennifer giggled, bolting toward the upstairs living room like it was Christmas morning. Wren felt a pit form in her stomach. Whatever Jennifer had just done, it was definitely bad.
Wren raced after her, wanting to know what exactly it was that Jennifer now supposedly knew. She didn't think there was really much interesting to know, at least, to Jennifer anyways. The trip up the stairs felt like an eternity as she heard Jennifer screaming about whatever it was in the living room. She finally made it to her destination to find Jennifer rambling on to Jack, who looked like he was startled awake.
"I knew she had a type, I knew it!" Jennifer was announcing to a somewhat dazed Jack.
He stifled a yawn, "What on Nod are you going on about?"
"Wren!" Jennifer exclaimed, "She has a thing for gingers!"
"I don't think her dating Simon means she has a thing for gingers," Jack rolled his eyes as he reached for his staff to get up. His weak frame appeared to gain some strength as he held onto it and let it's magic fill him.
"Oh trust me, she has a thing for gingers, and it's not just Simon," Jennifer teased, throwing a wicked grin Wren's way. "Oh no, she thinks someone else is reeeally cute too."
"Oh, who would that be?" Jesse asked as he and Fletcher appeared next to Wren, being drawn out of the garage from Jennifer's excitement. Jesse held a coke in his hand as he went to go sit next to Jack with Fletcher following close behind. Jack moved to the armrest, giving Jesse a knowing look. Whatever was happening, it was about to get interesting.
"Fletcher!" Jennifer announced. "She's in love with Fletcher!"
