Let me give you a little backstory.
I hope you're comfortable, because this is a doozy.
I'm fifteen years old. My mother, who I never met, didn't tell my dad I existed. He got married, had his own kids, blah blah blah. We'll get more into that later. I grew up in the foster system. That's where I met my best friend, who I happen to run into, but that's another thing we'll have to circle back to.
Anyways, I eventually get adopted by this magician guy. I remember at first, I was really confused. Why would a single magician want to adopt a seven year old girl? I couldn't imagine he wanted a little kid as his assistant. I wouldn't have fit right in those boxes that get sawn in half.
Well, it turns out, he's my uncle. Amos Kane. How he found out about me isn't super clear, but he adopted me and moved me to his magical mansion in Brooklyn. I met my dad a few times, where he gave me this magical amulet shaped like a weird hut. I never felt super close to him—at least, not as close as I felt to Amos, but we did have similar features, if you looked close enough. That's not saying I looked much like him.
He had a stern face, chocolatey skin, and black hair. I'm a bit fairer, my complexion looking more like a latte, probably due to my mom. I have long, chocolate-colored hair, and my eyes are a weird pale blue-green. I couldn't tell you why. I can only assume my mom had brown hair and blue eyes. But still, the way we narrow our eyes when we're thinking, or the way we pronounce spells, they're the same.
I learned that my father has two kids: Sadie and Carter. Carter travels around with him, while Sadie lives with her grandparents in London. Apparently, we're super powerful because of our bloodline or something, so we're not supposed to be all together. Of course, I don't have the same crossed bloodline as my siblings, but apparently, whoever my mom was, she was pretty powerful too. My dad never really spoke about her, but from the bits and pieces of information he gave me, she was one of the best magicians around.
So, anyways, Amos took me in to the twenty first nome, where we're the only magicians. He taught me a ton of Egyptian magic, gave me my own supplies, and showed me this incredible world existing right beneath the noses of regular mortals. He taught me a bit about Egyptian history, and told me all about how we always need to live on the east side of the river (aka, Brooklyn). But he also told me about Manhattan, and how it's ruled by the Greek gods. For some reason, he made it a point to teach me about them too. Whenever I asked why, he always insisted it was because we lived so close-by, we may as well be neighbors.
Keep your friends close, he warned me, and your enemies closer.
At the time, I didn't understand why he was trying to convince me that the Greeks were terrible. I mean, they never did anything to bother us. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, I can tell you it's because he was trying to protect me, and to keep me on the side of the Egyptians. He didn't want me crossing over to the other side.
Now, here's where my life takes a turn. I get a dream one night, telling me to go to Detroit. It was a woman, holding these two torches. She told me that the fate of the world depended on me going, and that if I didn't then, it would spell disaster.
Amos agreed I should go and check it out, so I did. And that's where our story begins.
