Esmeray's POV

The next day, sunlight flooded through the large windows of the common room at Le Rosey, illuminating the elegant space where students gathered to study, socialize, and gossip. Esmeray Vanderbilt sat at a table in the corner, surrounded by her notebooks and textbooks, attempting to focus on her assignments. However, her thoughts kept drifting back to the arrival and the unfamiliar faces she had encountered.

The bell rang, signaling the start of Contemporary issues, the class where they would form groups for their first major project. As she entered the classroom, anxiety churned in her stomach. This was the moment when she could be paired with anyone in the class. Who would she end up with?

"Today we're going to form groups for our upcoming project",announced Ms.Laurent, the teacher, her voice echoing through the classroom. "You'll be exploring various social issues and presenting your findings creatively. The topics are diverse, so choose wisely."

Esmeray glanced around the room, trying to gauge the dynamics of her classmates. She hoped to land with someone who could keep up with her- someone serious about the work and not just interested in making it a popular contest.

Edmund's POV

Across the room, Edmund Rothchild leaned against the wall with his friend Alexander Hawthorne, flipping through a notebook filled with ideas for the project. As he scanned the classroom, he noticed Esmeray sitting alone, her brow furrowed in concentration. He couldn't deny that there was something intriguing about her fierce determination, even if he found her attitude a bit over the top.

"Do you think we'll get paired with anyone interesting?" Alexander asked, breaking Edmund's thoughts.

"I hope so", Edmund replied, smirking. "I don't want to end up with someone who just wants to coast through. I need a challenge."

"Just don't get too carried away", Alexander warned. "You know how this school is. Everyone's trying to prove something."

Edmund chuckled, his gaze returning to Esmeray, who looked deep in thought. "Especially her", he said, nodding in her direction. "She looks like she's ready to take on the world."

Esmeray's POV

As Ms.Laurent began assigning groups, Esmeray felt her stomach twist with anticipation. "I will randomly pair you with your project partners," she announced, shuffling papers on her desk.

Esmeray's heart raced as she listened to the names being called. With each announcement, she hoped she wouldn't hear Edmund's name. Finally, Ms.Laurent said, "Esmeray Vanderbilt and Edmund Rothchild."

The moment felt like a punch to the gut. She shot a glare at Edmund, who was grinning as if he'd just won the lottery. "Lucky me," he said, his smirk only fueling her irritation.

"Lucky you? Try unlucky," she snapped, refusing to let his confidence shake her. "I'm not here to play games."

Edmund leaned back in his chair, clearly amused by her reaction.

"Oh, I wouldn't dream of playing games with you, Esmeray. I just think this will be fun," he replied, his tone light, though she could sense the challenge lurking beneath.

Edmund's POV

Edmund leaned forward, intrigued by her fire. "So what's your grand plan for this project? I'd love to hear it."

"First, we agree on the project's direction without your ridiculous ideas", she said, crossing her arms defiantly."And I don't want to hear any of your flashy nonsense."

"Ridiculous? Is that what you think?" he replied, raising an eyebrow, genuinely curious. "I thought my ideas were rather brilliant."

"Brilliant or not, we need a solid plan, not just a presentation that dazzles," she countered, her voice steady and firm. "This isn't about entertainment; it's about making a statement."

He studied her, recognizing the conviction in her words. "Alright, let's hear your plan then."

"Fine. I want to highlight the pressures of wealth and how it affects our lives," she said, her tone unwavering. We'll interview students, get their stories, and create something real."

"Real, huh?" he mused, intrigued. "But how do we make it stand out?"

"Maybe you should focus on the content instead of the spectacle," she shot back, refusing to back down. "You might learn something."

Edmund felt a spark of interest ignite within him. There was something captivating about her intensity, even if he didn't quite understand it yet.

Esmeray's POV

Esmeray narrowed her eyes at him, determined not to show any signs of vulnerability. "If you want to contribute, then stop with the theatrics and focus on substance."

He raised an eyebrow, impressed by her determination. "Alright, I can do that. But I'll warn you, I don't go easy on my teammates."

"Neither do I," she shot back, her eyes glinting with determination.

As their discussion continued, their banter filled the room with tension. Each word exchanged was charged with competitive energy that electrified the air between them. They might be rivals, but Esmeray was resolute in her belief that she wouldn't let him think he could outsmart her.

Edmund's POV

Edmund felt exhilarated by the challenge she presented. He enjoyed this back-and-forth with Esmeray, even if it meant navigating her defensiveness.

"Let's get to work then", he said, nodding in her direction. "But just so you know, I'm not going to hold back."

"Good," she replied, her tone sharp."I wouldn't want you to."

As they dove into their discussion, the tension between them began to shift an undercurrent of competition sparking between them. Esmeray might not know him yet, but Edmund was eager to prove himself, even if it meant battling her every step of the way.
