The scent of earth after rain clung to the air, heavy and damp. Roseanne Potter held Teddy's hand tightly as they followed Geralt and Ciri through the dense forest, their footsteps muffled by the moss-covered ground.
The trees, ancient and towering, stretched high into the sky, their branches twisting like gnarled fingers.
The world they had been thrown into was unlike anything Roseanne had ever known—wild and untamed, brimming with magic so foreign that it left her on edge.
Teddy, small and wide-eyed, clung to her side. His little fingers wrapped around hers, seeking the comfort only a mother could provide.
"Mama, where are we going?" His voice was barely above a whisper, but in the silence of the forest, it seemed to echo.
"We're going somewhere safe," Roseanne replied softly, glancing down at him with a reassuring smile she didn't quite feel.
She could sense the tension in Geralt, the way his body remained coiled and ready for danger, even as he led the way with a steady, unhurried pace.
The Witcher was a man accustomed to walking the fine line between life and death, his instincts sharpened by years of facing monsters that most couldn't even imagine.
"Keep up," Geralt's voice rumbled ahead of them, low and authoritative. He didn't turn around, but Roseanne knew he was keeping an eye on them. She appreciated the protection, even if it wasn't offered in words.
The trail wound deeper into the forest, where the light barely filtered through the thick canopy overhead.
Ciri, walking just a few steps ahead of Roseanne, cast occasional glances back, her curiosity about the newcomers barely hidden.
She was still a child—wild, yes, but with the same innocence that flickered in Teddy's eyes. A girl who had seen too much, too soon.
Roseanne's grip on her wand remained firm, her senses heightened. This wasn't the first time she had been thrown into a world full of danger.
But here, with no allies, no understanding of the rules or the magic that governed this realm, she felt exposed. Vulnerable. It was not a feeling she was used to.
As they pressed further into the forest, Teddy's steps began to slow. His small legs struggled to keep pace with the adults. Roseanne knelt, scooping him up into her arms with a quiet, comforting hum.
"You're doing great, Teddy. Just a little further, okay?"
He nodded sleepily, his head resting on her shoulder. The day's events had worn him out, and she could feel the exhaustion pulling at him, though he was trying hard to stay strong.
Geralt glanced back for the first time since they had started walking, his golden eyes sharp as they swept over her and Teddy. "We'll stop soon," he said, his voice gruff but not unkind. "There's a village ahead. Safer there."
