the Spotlight

The morning sun poured into Amelie's hotel room, casting warm golden light across the bedspread.

She sat up, stretching her arms and blinking away the grogginess. Today was the NHL Awards ceremony, and she could already feel the buzz in the air—excitement mingled with tension.

After last night's conversation with Nico, a sense of calm had settled over her, but now, as the reality of the day hit, that calm started to fray at the edges.

She wasn't sure if it was the pressure of the event or the unresolved feelings between her and Nico, but something about today felt different.

Can we really keep things uncomplicated?

The thought hovered at the back of her mind as she got up and padded to the bathroom. She splashed cold water on her face, trying to shake off the last remnants of sleep, and stared at her reflection.

Her phone buzzed with another message from her group chat.

Amelie chuckled, grabbing a towel to dry her face. Her friends' banter was light-hearted, but there was an undeniable truth behind it.

Tonight, all eyes would be on her—and Nico. After getting dressed in casual clothes, she grabbed her phone to check the time. Only a few hours until they needed to be ready for the red carpet. She hadn't seen Nico since their talk last night in the lobby, but they were bound to cross paths soon, especially since the team had scheduled a pre-event gathering in one of the conference rooms.

As she made her way downstairs, her heart began to race. How was she supposed to act around him now? Their talk had gone well, but being in front of everyone else would be different. She couldn't afford to let anything slip—especially in front of the media.

When she stepped into the conference room, she immediately spotted Nico. He was standing by the coffee station, chatting with Jack and a couple of other teammates.

His easy smile, the way he stood confidently—he had always seemed so at ease in these settings. But the moment his eyes met hers, his expression softened slightly, a subtle shift that only she would notice.

Amelie swallowed hard and smiled at him before turning her attention to the rest of the room. She grabbed a bottle of water and sat down at a nearby table. She needed to keep her cool.

This was just another day with the team, right? But even as she tried to stay focused, her mind kept drifting back to last night. Nico had made it clear he liked her, that whatever was between them wasn't just some fleeting attraction.

The memory of his hand in hers, his earnest eyes meeting hers, sent a shiver down her spine. She couldn't deny her own feelings, but now, in the cold light of day, the reality of what they were navigating felt heavier.

Before she could dwell on it too long, Jack came over and plopped down in the chair next to her, flashing his usual mischievous grin.

"So, you ready for the circus tonight?" he asked, gesturing toward the event venue they'd be heading to later.

"Nashville is always nuts during these things. "Amelie laughed softly.

"Yeah, I think I've mentally prepared myself. Kind of."

"You? Mentally prepared? No way," Jack teased, nudging her with his elbow.

"You look like you've been lost in thought all morning."Amelie shot him a playful glare.

"Shut up, Hughes." He raised his hands in mock surrender.

"Hey, no judgment here. Just saying, you might want to take a break from whatever's going on in that pretty head of yours. Tonight's supposed to be fun, right?"

"Right," she agreed, though she knew there was more on her mind than just the awards.

As Jack went on to chat with another teammate, Amelie let her gaze wander back to Nico.

He was still talking, laughing along with something someone had said, but every now and then, she caught him glancing her way.

It was a subtle, almost unnoticeable flicker, but it was there.Amelie finished her water and decided to head back to her room to get ready.

She needed time to clear her head before stepping into the spotlight. Tonight was going to be a big deal, and she couldn't afford to let her personal life become a distraction—no matter how complicated it was becoming.

Hours later, Amelie stood in front of her full-length mirror, smoothing the fabric of her gown. The deep emerald green dress clung to her in all the right places, elegant yet understated.

She liked that it wasn't too flashy but still had an air of sophistication.

Her hair was styled in soft waves that cascaded over her shoulders, and her makeup was simple, highlighting her natural features.

She took a deep breath, giving herself one last once-over. You've got this. It's just one night.

Her heart fluttered. She hadn't even seen Nico yet, but the thought of walking into that crowded room, of being by his side, filled her with a strange mixture of excitement and pressure building.

Tonight wasn't just about the awards or even the red carpet. It was about figuring out how she and Nico fit into each other's lives outside the bubble of their private conversations. When the elevator doors opened and she stepped into the lobby, she spotted him instantly.

Nico was standing near the entrance, looking effortlessly handsome in a sleek black suit, his hair neatly styled. He caught her eye, and for a moment, the rest of the world seemed to fade away.

His gaze was intense but warm, and as she approached, he gave her that familiar smile that always made her feel a little more grounded."You look incredible," he murmured as she reached him, his eyes taking her in.

Amelie smiled, feeling her cheeks flush. "You don't look so bad yourself."

They stood there for a beat, the air between them charged with something unspoken but undeniable.

Then, as if reading each other's thoughts, they turned toward the waiting car that would take them to the event. This was it—time to step into the spotlight together. As they made their way to the venue, Amelie couldn't help but wonder how much longer they could keep things under wraps.

The night was about to unfold, and with it, so were the possibilities of what came next for them. But for now, all she could do was breathe, smile, and let the night take its course.
