JACKIE HAYDEN FELT the heat of the summer sun warm her body as she lays on the sunbed in the garden of the cameron home.

her eyes shut as she inhaled the warm air gently, her chest rising then lowering.

"how much of that shit did you use?" rafe cameron's voice rang through her ears.

causing the girl to sit up softly and open her eyes.

watching as he pointed to the tanning oil, now having half of it lathered onto her body that was currently shining.

"as much as i need. i need to keep this tan," she smiles sweetly as he sat on the sunbed in front of hers.

"you don't need to keep it, you want to." he corrects running a hand through his hair that was parted in the middle.

"actually i need to. sarah and i made a bet on who could tan the best." jackie corks her head to the side as she adjusts the baby blue bikini top she had on.

he watched her hand and eyeing the dangerous area with cheekiness.

"careful, rafe cameron." she points her finger at him watching his every move.

rafe smirked at her, leaning back on his elbows, the sun catching the sharp angles of his face.

"careful? I'm just sittin' here, mindin' my own business," he drawled, his tone dripping with that lazy amusement that always made her wonder what was going on behind those blue eyes.

"uh-huh." jackie narrowed her eyes, her lips twitching up despite herself.

"Minding your business while watching mine, right?"

he didn't deny it, just shrugged, that cocky grin never leaving his face.

"don't want you to overdo it with that oil. next thing, you're slippin' right off that sunbed."

she laughed, shaking her head. "nice try, but I'm not the one who needs looking after."

"oh, you're tough now?" he asked, his eyebrows lifting as he rolled his head to the side to look at her fully, that familiar edge of challenge in his voice.

"i've always been tough. You're just slow to catch on," she shot back, leaning back into the sunbed with a self-satisfied smile.

she watched him waiting for a snarky banter filled answer only for him to sniffle loudly scrunching his face.

and hers dropped.

"where were you?" she asks quietly sitting up now completely facing him.

and the way he averted eye contact answered her own question.

"rafe.. where were you?" her voice came out stern and anyone on the island wouldn't have even recognized it was jackie speaking at the way she wasn't so giddy.

"i was just at barry's." he mumbles flicking his nose.

a scoff came out of her mouth and she had felt her legs instantly take lead and stand up.

grabbing her large tote bag and stuffing in her towel and all the scattered items on where she was laying.

throwing on the sundress she had taken off and slipping her slippers on.

"woah woah." he had grabbed her waist as soon as she tried to walk off.

his body still sat while hers was standing, eyes glaring down at him.

"where you going?" his voice was soft.

"i have a job rafe." she spat while crossing her arms.

his fingers trail on her hips as his thumb rubs in circles gently, making her grow angrier at the way he thought he could please her.
