The wait at the airport flies by, and soon we're boarding the plane.

Just like we said on text, Sonya has the window seat, I have the middle, and Harriet has the aisle. Unfortunately for her, Sonya didn't manage to convince her brother to swap seats, so he is sitting behind her for the flight.

"Alright," our teacher, Mr Vince, speaks. "We have three hours until we arrive, when we get there, we go into our assorted cabins."

One kid from my class flies their hand into the air.

"Yes, Dylan?" Mr Vince points to the kid.

"What are our cabin groups?"

"I sent the email to you yesterday," Vince tells us, shaking his head. "You lot were supposed to check it."

Luckily, I did. The cabins are groups of four, and I'm with Harriet, Sonya, and a girl that's called Teresa. From my few months of living here, I haven't talked to Teresa once, so that'll be fun. But luckily Harriet told me that she's nice, and I hope she's right.

Sonya nudges me with her elbow. "I didn't check the email. Do you know who I'm with?"

With a sigh, I answer her question. "You're with me, Harriet, and Teresa."

"Yes!" She cheers, causing everyone to look at her.

Her face gains a colour from the stares, and she jolts forward. She turns around to look at her brother. "Excuse me?"

"You're embarrassing me," Newt, her brother, replies. "Now shut up, your voice is annoying."

She flips around and takes her phone out, attempting to watch TikTok with no internet. I don't honestly know if she's the smartest...

Laughing to myself as she struggles, I unlock my phone and start playing games that don't require wi–fi. As you can see, I'm actually smart and thought ahead... unlike Sonya.

Kidding. She's book smart, just maybe not street smart.

After the long flight, the plane finally lands on the island.

Long sighs of relief echo around the plane as the air flows in.

"I'm so excited!" Harriet squeals. "Do you guys want to have a bonfire tonight?"
"With who?" Sonya asks, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

"Us, Teresa, and the boys?" Harriet suggests.

"Sure," I agree.

"Is that including my brother?"

"Yes, Sonya, it is."

"Ugh," she groans, standing up from her seat as she waits for me and Harriet to exit before her.

We do so, and we walk down the aisle before exiting the plane.

"Hey, Newt," Sonya calls her brother over to us. "We're having a bonfire tonight, wanna come?"

"Who can I bring?" Newt questions.

"All of your friends," she answers.
"Alright." Newt nods, casting a glance at his friends. "We'll be there."

"Cool," Sonya responds dryly.

"Very," he says, matching her dry energy. "Alright. I'll see you around."

"Bye Newt."

"Later."

Chatter echoes amongst us, but our voices fade into an awkward silence.

"Anyway." Harriet clears her throat in an attempt to turn the awkward silence into a conversation. "Should we go to our cabin?"

"Yeah, we're number seven." I shove my phone in my pocket and begin walking towards the cabin that has the number seven painted on the walls.

Sonya pushes the door open and steps inside first. "Wow. Oh, hey, Resa."

"Hi, Sonya," the girl who is sitting on her bed greets, looking up at us. "Hey, Harriet."

The girl has long, raven hair, and her face is full with freckles. Her eyes are a pretty shade of dark blue, and she's wearing a white shirt with jeans. She has a pretty necklace around her neck, two small earrings, and she has a few bracelets around her wrists.

"Hi." Harriet gives the girl a nod before turning to me. "Whitley, this is Teresa." She turns back to the girl who's supposedly called Teresa. "Teresa, this is Whitley."

"Hey," I say awkwardly. "Call me Whit."

"Nice to meet you." Teresa gives me a smile, to which I return kindly. "If you want you can call me Tes, I don't mind."

"Oh, Resa." Sonya turns towards the raven–haired girl. "We're having a bonfire tonight with my brother and his friends, do you want to come?"

"Will Thomas be there?"

Sonya gives her a smirk, tossing her light blonde plait over her shoulder. "Yeah, he will. You can finally go ask him out."

Teresa shakes her head. "No way. I'd never get the courage to. It's not like he even likes me."

"You sure?" Harriet smirks at her, raising an eyebrow.

"Do you like Thomas?" I blurt out, confused at this conversation.

"Uh, yeah." Teresa's cheeks turn a shade of pink as she looks down, an embarrassed smile planted on her lips. "Please don't tell anyone."

"I won't, I promise." My arm slightly rests on her shoulder. "And I'm not judging you, don't worry."

"Thank you," she says, smiling.

"Of course."

"Alright, everyone," Mr Vince speaks loudly from outside our cabin. "Once you've finished checking out your cabins, come to the main hall for the rules and some food."

As ordered, we begin to file into the main hall, and luckily Sonya, Harriet, Teresa and I get a table.

Once all of the students are inside, Mr Vince starts to speak. "We are going to be here for six weeks, so there are some rules. First of all, no girls go into boys' cabins, and no boys in girls' cabins."

Groans echo around the room, mostly coming from the boys.

"I know, I know. But we don't want anyone to get pregnant," Mr Vince says, causing silence except for a few snickers. He then continues. "Second rule, lights off at 11 pm. And no sneaking out."

Oops. I guess we're breaking a rule.

"Next, when doing the day's activities, no phones. You can only use phones afterwards or before."

After he says that, I hear multiple phones being shoved into pockets.

"Now. No alcohol, drugs, or any sort of illegal substances. And the school rules apply here as well." Mr Vince clears his throat. "Now moving onto our routine. For the first couple of days, there won't be many activities, mostly just settling in and meeting new people. After that, the activities start. Every week, groups will rotate between the five activities. The activities are sports, camping, swimming, cooking, and arts. Everyone wakes at 7 am for breakfast, and activities begin at eight."

Someone shoots their hand up. "Who is in which group?"

"I'll tell you all the groups when the activities start," Mr Vince informs. "Activities stop at 3 pm, and dinner's at 6 pm. Some nights we will have bonfires, and others not. For the last few days after the activities have been finished, we will be just having fun on the island. Are there any questions?"

Silence.

"Alright then. You may all go and relax."

We all do as he says, and we exit the main hall in a big group. Once we get outside, we part our different ways.
