Chapter 9: Warm Up

.·:*¨❀✘❀•°𝕎𝔹°•❀✘❀¨*:·.

Ah... perhaps this is what deer feel when they stare into headlights?

I felt my brain had blue-screened and was desperately trying to reboot itself to no avail. The flimsy dial of my survival instincts had just jammed on "freeze" and I knew not even a crowbar would get it loose. The burning in my chest made me realize that I had just up and stopped breathing at some point as well.

Gray stared at me.

I stared at him back.

We stared at each other.

'Remember, if you don't move it won't see you.' My brain oh so helpfully supplied, the poor damaged little thing trying in vain to keep the vessel it piloted in one piece.

"Just now... You just said my name." He stated, eliciting memories of how cold and threatening his voice had been when he was beating the breaks off Helmet not too long ago.

The proverbial fans for the school laptop trying to run Minecraft that was my brain started to go into overtime at the question. I had just said his name, yes. Did I want him to know that? Abso-goddamn-lutley not. And so, to get myself out of this situation I now needed to use my elite "lying-like-a-rug" skills.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

We looked at each other.

"No... I said Olé." I croaked before getting into the stance of a flamenco dancer and clapping my hands twice. "You know, Olé."

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

We looked at each other.

I then carefully got down to my hands and knees and bowed until my head touched the ground.

"I'm sorry."

"...For what?"

"For being a waste of human space..."

He looked at me.

I looked at the ground.

I wanted to ctrl+alt+del my entire existence but I'm sure Grey would do it himself in the next few seconds. An understandable decision, given that he was forced to bear witness to my sheer ineptitude-

"You're that girl from the underpass."

I snapped my head up to gape at him. He didn't look nearly as angry or annoyed as I thought. In fact, he still had the same blank expression as before. That,,, was a good sign right?

"H- Huh?! You... you remember that?" I muttered, feeling an odd mix of anxious awe. It had been weeks since the fight even though the memories of it still felt fresh in my mind. Could the same be said for him too? I doubt it, but even if it did, I doubt I made the same kind of impression on him as he did to me. Heck, we hadn't even exchanged a single word with each other back then! If it wasn't for that calculating look he had when he was dragged over by Helmet, he most likely wouldn't have even noticed I was there.

Grey just nodded, his cool-as-a-cucumber disposition making my flustered state all the more mortifying. I scrambled to my feet, my face feeling as hot as an iron. Well, this was certainly one of the more embarrassing interactions I've had with someone.
