"I apologize for that, sir," Elina said, her voice soft, though concern seeped through each word. She shifted nervously, unsure of how Shin might respond.
Shin, however, barely glanced at her, his gaze fixed on his coffee. He took a slow sip, letting the silence stretch between them. The tension was palpable, thick enough to cut with a knife.
"It's not a big deal," he said finally, his voice calm but firm. His eyes flicked up to meet hers briefly before he continued. "Your friend is concerned, as anyone would be. It's true, after all, that we're a man and a woman living in the same house."
Elina's throat tightened. She wanted to explain further, to say something to defend Edwyn, but Shin's tone told her there was no need. He already understood everything.
"But," Shin continued, setting his cup down with deliberate care, "what Edwyn doesn't realize is that this is strictly business. Nothing more. I'm sure he misunderstood the situation."
His words hung in the air, and for a moment, the only sound in the room was the faint ticking of the clock. Elina swallowed, and thought "What with this silent?'.
Shin sighed softly, standing up and smoothing the front of his suit. His movements were precise, calculated, as though everything he did carried a purpose.
"Just make sure that Mr. Edwyn doesn't concern himself further with this... misunderstanding." His voice held a sharp edge now, and Elina felt her stomach tighten. "And tell him that other people will be here too—staff who will take care of the house. You're simply working for me as an assistant. Around the clock."
He locked eyes with her, and the weight of his gaze made Elina's breath hitch. There was something unreadable in his expression—something that made it clear there was no room for doubt or argument.
"Let him know there's nothing for him to worry about," Shin added, his tone softening slightly, though his words still held the same authority. "I don't want him thinking... whatever he's thinking."
Elina nodded quickly, her heart racing. "I understand, sir. I'll make sure it's clear."
Shin's lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Good." He walked over to the window, his gaze now lost in the view outside. "You've been working hard lately, and frankly, you don't look well because of what happened yesterday. Take today off. Get some rest."
Elina blinked, surprised. "I—I appreciate that, sir, but—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Shin reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek black card. He turned and placed it on the table in front of her, the glossy surface catching the light.
"Use this," he said, his tone casual as if he were handing her something as ordinary as a grocery list. "Buy yourself some clothes. Or anything you need or whatever it might suit you"
Elina stared at the card, her pulse quickening. It wasn't just any credit card—it was a black card, the kind only the ultra-wealthy carried. Her cheeks flushed, and she could feel her fingers trembling slightly.
"Sir, I—I can't possibly—"
Shin raised a hand, silencing her. "It's not a request, Ms. Ottosin Take it. You need it."
"But I—"
"You've worked hard enough without complaint," he interrupted, "Consider it part of your compensation. And there is a lot of things you need to buy because of what happen yesterday "
Elina felt a lump form in her throat. She wanted to refuse, to say that it wasn't necessary, that she didn't deserve something like this. But Shin's expression left no room for negotiation.
Swallowing her pride, she nodded slowly. "Thank you, sir."
"Good," he said again, his attention already shifting back to the window. "Now, rest. And when you feel better, we'll talk more about the work coming up. I need to go to office better do thing right here Ms. Ottosin I expect no more less than you"
Elina gathered the card in her hand, feeling its weight as if it symbolized something far greater than she could understand. She stood there for a moment, unsure of what to say or do next. The silence stretched between them once more, as heavy and uncertain as before.
"Is there anything else, sir?" she asked quietly, hoping her voice didn't betray her nerves.
Shin glanced over his shoulder, his eyes lingering on her for a moment longer than she expected. "No," he said finally. "That'll be all for now."
Elina gave a small bow, turning to leave the room. As she walked away, the sensation of holding that black card still left her uneasy, as if it carried more than just the ability to purchase luxury—it carried the weight of expectation. She paused at the door, taking one last glance back at Shin, who stood silently by the window, lost in his thoughts.
There was something about him, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. And though she had worked for him for some time now, moments like these reminded her just how little she really knew about him.
With a deep breath, she left the room, the door closing softly behind her.
