Scarab beetle (Scarabaeidae)

-ˋˏ [] ˎˊ Scarab beetles are part of the insecta family. They consist of approximately 30,000 different species. They are defined by their compact, strong bodies with rotund, almond-shaped bodies. They can be easily defined from other beetles by their unusual antennae, as each one has a 3-plated end that forms a club. Their back legs are often scalloped or toothed in order to harbour and exceed their digging preformance.

-ˋˏ [] ˎˊ Scarab beetles and other species are a worldwide family, some species being more known of then others. Obviously, when you think scarab beetle (like the one in the photo), you think Saharan Africa, or more specifically, Egypt. That isn't incorrect, but other kinds of scarab beetle live in places like the U.S., and even in Europe.

DID YOU KNOW -

-ˋˏ [] ˎˊ The scarab beetles in 'The Mummy' are obviously not real, but instead of being comparable to actual scarabs, they have similarities to dermestids. Dermestids are like fungi in the way they prefer to eat things like dead flesh. This makes them fall into the scavengers section.

-ˋˏ [] ˎˊ Beetles aren't ones for biting or attacking. Their main strategy to warn off predators is to play dead by pulling their legs under their bodies. That is, if they're at all bothered by a presence of a potential predator.

-ˋˏ [] ˎˊ The largest scarab beetle is known as the Goliath beetle. These humongous guys can be found in rainforest sections of Africa, and the males can reach an impressive size of 11 cm (4.3 in) in length and weighing up to 100 g (3.5 oz).
